Unfolding Nature

Gana Art is pleased to present Unfolding Nature, a solo exhibition of Lee Sang Guk, an artist who pursued fundamental and essential values of form by engaging deeply with nature. The exhibition will be held at Gana Art Hannam from September 2 to October 9, 2025. Lee studied Korean traditional Painting at Seoul National University. In the early stages of his career, he focused on the landscapes of the 1970s–80s in northwestern Seoul, hillside neighborhoods, industrial zones, and the people he encountered in daily life. After earning a graduate degree from Dongguk University’s College of Education in 1984, he worked as a middle school art teacher until 1989. He then devoted himself fully to painting, deconstructing the image of nature and building his own artistic realm in pursuit of its essence. This exhibition traces the artist’s path, from his early drawings to later paintings centered on the theme of nature.

In the early stages of his artistic career, Lee Sang Guk reflected that he was drawn to vernacular sentiment and the recovery of a sense of the real, seeking to convey the solitude of powerless individuals amid unstable times. His works on paper mirrored his personal experiences and immediate surroundings, charting the process through which he developed his own palette and formative language. After becoming a full-time artist, he began to focus on nature as his central subject, redirecting his practice toward an inner and formal inquiry. In this transition, woodblock printing became a vital medium in shaping his pictorial language. The discipline of carving provided a structural foundation of line and form, while oil painting infused the canvas with materiality and tension through its layered brushstrokes and dense pigments. Although distinct in texture, the two media shared a common formative language and together formed the basis of his artistic realm. This exhibition centers on a series of trees and mountains, which embody the culmination of these explorations. Moving between figuration and abstraction, Lee carried out a variety of visual experiments. In some works, repeated and concentrated brushstrokes gradually formed recognizable figures, whereas in others, natural elements were broken down into abstract structures. Rough, overlapping brushstrokes extended beyond representation to generate rhythm and tension across the canvas surface. This exhibition traces the trajectory of Lee’s evolving artistic language and offers an occasion to reflect on the lasting significance of his vision.

가나아트는 자연에 주목하여 근원적이고 본질적인 조형 가치를 추구한 작가 이상국의 개인전 《Unfolding Nature》를 9월 2일부터 10월 9일까지 가나아트 한남에서 개최한다. 이상국은 서울대학교 미술대학에서 동양화를 전공하였으며 화단에 등단한 이후 작업 초기에는 자신이 나고 자란 서울 서북부의 1970~80년대 풍경, 산동네와 공장지대, 그리고 일상에서 마주한 주변 인물들을 주요 소재로 삼았다. 1984년 동국대학교 교육대학원을 졸업한 이후 그는 중학교 미술 교사로 재직하며 1989년까지 교직 생활을 이어갔다. 이후 전업 작가로 전향한 그는 자연을 해체하고 그만의 조형 언어를 구축하는 작업에 몰두하며 본질을 찾아가고자 했다. 이번 개인전에서는 초기의 드로잉에서부터 후기의 자연을 주제로 한 회화를 경유하여 이상국의 예술적 발자취를 따라 걷는다.

이상국은 작업 초기 토속적이고 서정적인 정서, 현실적 미감의 회복에 주목하며 불안정한 시대 상황 속 고독과 무력한 사람들의 외로움을 표현하고자 했다고 회고했다. 그의 종이 작업은 개인적 경험과 주변 환경을 반영하며 자신만의 색채와 회화법을 모색해 나갔던 과정을 보여준다. 전업 작가로 전향한 이후 그는 자연을 주제로 삼아 내면적이고 조형적인 탐구로 작업의 방향을 전환했다. 이 과정에서 그의 목판화 작업은 중요한 매개가 되었다. 목판화는 선과 형태의 구조적 뼈대를 다지는 토대가 되었고, 유화는 중첩된 붓질과 두터운 물감을 통해 화면 전체에 물질성과 긴장을 부여했다. 두 매체는 서로 다른 질감을 지니면서도 동일한 조형 언어를 공유하며 그의 회화 세계의 근간을 이루었다. 이번 전시의 중심을 이루는 산과 나무 연작은 이러한 탐구가 집약된 결과를 보여준다. 그는 구상과 추상의 경계를 넘나들며 다양한 실험을 전개했다. 어떤 작품에서는 반복적이고 응집된 붓질로 형상을 점층적으로 구축해 구상적 화면으로 나타났고, 또 다른 작품에서는 형태를 해체해 추상적 구조로 전환했다. 화면 위 짧게 끊긴 선과 중첩된 붓질은 단순한 재현을 넘어 화면 전체에 긴장과 리듬을 형성한다. 이번 전시는 이상국의 회화적 탐구가 확장되어온 궤적을 보여주는 자리이자 그 의미를 다시 조망하는 기회가 될 것이다.
