Oh Sufan
A Thousand Dialogues

Gana Art is pleased to present 𝘈 𝘛𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘋𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘶𝘦𝘴, a solo exhibition by Oh Sufan (b. 1946). This exhibition focuses on drawings from his ongoing series titled 𝘋𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘶𝘦, which follows the progression of his previous series: 𝘎𝘰𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘝𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘺, 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺, 𝘝𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, and 𝘋𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘶𝘦. Initiated in the late 2000s and continuing to this day, Dialogue explores themes of communication with nature, past civilizations, and human. Executed on paper, Oh’s Dialogue works emphasize a freer and more spirited touch, made possible by his use of diverse materials such as ink, gouache, and oil pastel. By bringing together over forty works—including drawings as well as experiments across multiple media—ranging from the 1980s to newly produced pieces in 2025, Gana Art revisits the artist’s formal explorations. The exhibition seeks to show how the Dialogue series approaches the ultimate aspiration of his practice: an “ideal world of freedom.”

Oh once remarked on his drawing practice, “There are many ridges we must cross, and in order to cross them, we must always keep something in mind. I achieve this through drawing.” For Oh, drawing is as vital as painting on canvas, serving as a visible trace of thought in process. He always keeps various types of paper nearby, responding immediately to emerging ideas with drawing. In these works, he pursues a freer form of expression. Instead of a brush, he sometimes uses wild kudzu roots picked up from the streets to scatter paint, or presses paper onto wet pigment to capture the traces of chance effects. He also actively incorporates materials rarely employed in his canvas works, such as oil pastels and gouache. By focusing on the physical vitality of materials in this way, he sought to keep his drawings in a state of liveliness. The artist places great importance on breathing life into the surface, hoping that viewers may discover free gestures and expressions within these “living paintings.”

A Thousand Dialogues

가나아트는 오수환(b. 1946-)의 개인전, 《A Thousand Dialogues》를 개최합니다. 이번 전시는 <곡신>, <적막>, <변화>, <대화>로 흐름이 이어지는 그의 연작 중 <대화>에 해당하는 드로잉에 집중합니다. 작가가 2000년대 후반 시작해 현재까지 지속하고 있는 <대화>는 자연, 과거의 문명, 인간과의 교감을 주제로 합니다. 종이에 펼쳐진 오수환의 <대화>는 먹, 과슈, 오일파스텔 등 다양한 재료 사용에 힘입어 한층 자유롭고 경쾌한 필치가 강조된 모습입니다. 가나아트는 1980년대 작업부터 올해 제작된 신작까지 총 40여 점의 작업을 아우름으로써 드로잉을 비롯해 다양한 매체에서 시도된 오수환의 조형 실험을 돌아보고, 이를 통해 <대화>가 작업의 궁극적인 목표인 ‘자유의 이상세계’에 어떻게 다가가고 있는지 살피고자 합니다. 

오수환은 드로잉 작업에 대해 “우리가 넘어야 할 고개가 많은데, 고개를 넘으려면 늘 무엇인가를 생각하고 있어야 한다. 나는 이를 드로잉을 통해 성취한다”고 말한 바 있습니다. 그에게 드로잉은 캔버스 작업과 마찬가지로 사유의 과정을 보여주는 작업입니다. 오수환은 갖가지 종이를 늘 곁에 두고 떠오르는 생각에 대한 즉각적인 반응으로 드로잉 작업을 합니다. 그는 드로잉에서 더욱 자유로운 형식을 추구하고 있습니다. 붓 대신 길에서 꺾은 칡뿌리를 사용해 물감을 흩뿌리거나 물감의 흔적을 종이로 덮어 찍어서 생기는 물성의 효과를 관찰하고, 캔버스 작업에서는 좀처럼 사용하지 않는 재료를 적극 활용합니다. 이렇게 물질의 힘을 표현하는 데 집중하면서 그는 드로잉을 생동하는 상태에 두고자 했습니다. 작가는 화면에 생기를 불어넣는 것을 중요시하며, ‘살아 있는 그림’에서 관람자들이 자유로운 표현과 표정을 읽을 수 있기를 기대합니다.
