Eun Nim Ro
Beginning of Life: am Anfang

Gana Art is pleased to present solo exhibition by Eunnim Ro, an artist of life who fills her picture-planes with simple lines and primordial colors. She was the first Korean artist to become a full professor at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences in Germany, where she contributed to art education for more than 20 years. She is also an artist who left strong footprints in the German art scene, through her activities at the Bauhaus, the House of World Culture in Berlin, the Berlin Documenta, International Peace Biennale, the 5^th International Paper Biennale and many other prominent exhibitions. Furthermore, in November 2019 she became the first non-German-born artist to have her a permanent exhibition hall established in her honor at the Michelstadt art museum. Through this exhibition featuring from the early works to recent works, Gana Art aims to take a look at her original art world focusing on ‘life’, a theme that penetrates Ro’s oeuvre.

Ro has shown diverse genres of work irrespective of media or place, from acrylic painting on Korean paper, to installation art, performance, terra cotta sculpture, and even stained glass in churches. The dot, which signifies the beginning of life, is a formative element that appears frequently in her paintings. As the dots gather to create a line, the artist uses this to reduce natural figures into their simplest forms. In addition, Ro visually embodies the artist’s own interpretation of nature through color. The four elements of water, fire, soil, and air that make up everything in the world appear in her paintings in blue, red, brown, and black, or white, respectively. Eunnim Ro’s work, which is simple, but contains endless and profound stories, will provide a time to reflect on life to those who visit the exhibition.

생명의 시작: am Anfang

“참다운 예술은 진정한 순수함을 원한다. 모든 복잡함이나 기술을 떠나, 단순함이 남아 있을 때 예술은 살아난다”

가나아트는 단순한 선과 원초적인 색으로 화면을 채우는 생명의 화가, 노은님(1946~)의 개인전인 《생명의 시작: am Anfang》을 선보인다. 그는 한국 작가로서는 최초로 국립 함부르크 조형예술대학의 정교수로 임용되어 20여 년간 독일 미술 교육에 기여한 한편, 바우하우스, 베를린 세계 문화의 집, 베를린 도큐멘타, 국제 평화 비엔날레, 제5회 국제 종이 비엔날레 등 유수의 전시에 초대된 바 있는 독일 미술계에 확실한 족적을 남긴 작가이다. 또한 2019년 11월에는 독일 미헬슈타트의 시립미술관에 그를 기리는 영구 전시관을 개관한 바 있는, 유일한 비독일 출생의 작가이다. 가나아트는 본 전시를 통해 그의 초기작에서부터 근작에 이르기까지의 작업 전체를 관통하는 주제인 “생명”에 초점을 맞춰 노은님의 작품 세계를 조망하고자 한다.

노은님은 한지에 그린 아크릴화, 설치미술, 퍼포먼스, 테라코타 조각, 심지어는 교회의 스테인드글라스에 이르기까지 매체와 장소에 구애받지 않고 다양한 장르의 작업을 선보여 왔다. 그는 ‘자연은 무엇으로 구성되어 있는지, 이를 구성하는 힘은 어떻게 작용하는 것인지’에 대한 의구심을 화두로 삼아 그만의 작업 방식을 찾아나갔다. 그중에서도 생명의 시작을 의미하는 점은 그의 회화에서 자주 등장하는 조형요소이다. 그리고 이러한 점들이 모여 선을 이루는데, 이를 이용해 그는 가장 단순한 형태로 자연의 형상을 환원시킨다. 이와 더불어 노은님은 자연을 구성하는 물질에 대한 작가만의 해석을 색채를 통해 시각적으로 화면에 구현한다. 세상 만물을 구성하는 물, 불, 흙, 공기의 4원소는 각기 파란색, 빨간색, 밤색, 검정 또는 흰색으로 그의 회화에 나타난다. 이처럼 단순하고 소박하지만, 끝이 없이 광활한 이야기를 담고 있는 노은님의 작품이 전시장을 찾은 이들에게 생명에 대한 깊이 있는 사유의 시간을 선사하기를 바란다.
