From Matter to Water

Gana Art is pleased to present From Matter to Water, a solo exhibition of works by Shim Moon-seup(b.1943-), who explores the world of endless possibilities crossing the boundaries of genres. This Exhibition, which will be held at Gana Art Center from May 10 to June 6, 2022, aims to offer the audience a chance to examine Shim’s formative language that continues consistently in various genres and media by presenting not only the paintings that Shim has recently been engaged in, but also the terracotta works that have been repeatedly dealt with since the very beginning of his careers.

Shim, one of the pioneers of modern Korean sculpture, has received international attention since the early 1970s for proposing the idea of “anti-sculpture.” Instead of creating or representing a specific object, he focused on minimizing the artist’s intervention to reveal the materiality of his works and pursued a natural interaction between the materials of the works, surroundings, and the audiences. His works, which present the circulation of materiality and time inherent in matters, have been conceptualized as paintings in the 2000s. Shim borrows the scenery of his hometown sea and captures the infinite order, motility, and enormous energy of the waves in the canvas. Through this, Shim expresses the circularity pursued as a sculptor visually and metaphorically.

The title of this exhibition, From Matter to Water, suggests Shim’s journey toward painting, a new realm, following his reputation as a sculptor, and also implies his willingness to complete the work in which the duality of sculptural thinking and pictorial expression responds to each other. This exhibition will be an opportunity to reflect on the process in which Shim, who has been exploring material throughout his life, extends the idea of anti-sculpture through the water. As Shim said that he is completely immersed in his work with the heart of exploring an unknown world as if he is diving and floundering in the water, Gana Art hopes that From Matter to Water will give the audience a time to immerse themselves in the vitality of Shim’s works.

심문섭
물物에서 물水로

가나아트는 규범화된 장르의 틀을 넘어 끝없는 가능성의 세계를 모색하는 심문섭(沈文燮, b.1943-)의 개인전 《물物에서 물水로》를 5월 10일부터 6월 6일까지 평창동 가나아트센터에서 개최한다. 《물物에서 물水로》는 심문섭이 최근 정진하고 있는 회화 작업뿐 아니라 활동 초기부터 반복적으로 다루어온 테라코타 작업을 함께 선보임으로써 다양한 장르와 매체에서 일관되게 지속되는 그의 조형 언어를 탐구할 수 있는 자리를 마련하고자 한다.

한국 현대 조각의 선두로 꼽히는 심문섭은 1970년대부터 기성 조각 개념에 반발하는 반(反)조각을 주창하며 일찍이 국제적인 조명을 받았다. 그는 특정한 대상을 창조하거나 재현하는 조각 대신, 작가의 개입을 최소화하여 재료 본연의 물성을 드러내는 작업을 전개했고 작품의 소재와 그를 둘러싼 환경 및 관람객 간의 자연스러운 상호 작용을 추구했다. 물성의 순환과 물질에 내재된 시간성을 체감하게 하는 그의 작업은 2000년대에 들어 개념화된 회화의 형태로 재탄생했다. 통영 출생의 심문섭은 고향 바다를 차경해 파도의 무한한 질서와 운동성, 그리고 거대한 에너지를 화폭에 담는다. 이를 통해 심문섭은 조각가로서 추구해 온 순환성을 가시적이면서도 은유적으로 표현한다. 

전시 제목 《물物에서 물水로》는 그간 명성을 쌓아온 조각에 이어 새로운 영역인 화업(畵業)에 매진하고 있는 심문섭의 여정과, 조각적인 사고 및 회화적인 표현의 이중성이 서로 호응하는 작업을 완성하려는 그의 의지를 내포한다. 이번 전시는 일생동안 물(物)을 탐구한 심문섭이 물(水)을 통해 반조각의 정신을 확장하는 과정을 반추하는 기회가 될 것이다. 자맥질을 하듯, 미지의 세계를 탐험하는 마음으로 작업에 몰입한다는 심문섭의 말처럼, 가나아트는 《물物에서 물水로》를 방문하는 모든 관람객이 그의 작업이 내뿜는 생명력에 흠뻑 빠져드는 시간을 가질 수 있기를 바란다.
