Aaron Johnson (b. 1975) is a contemporary artist based in Brooklyn. He received his Master of Fine Arts at Hunter College in New York after majoring in biology at the University of Arizona. From his college years, he was interested in art as a hobby, drawing grotesque organisms in his notebooks and frequenting the art museum. However, after witnessing the 9/11 attacks in 2001, he decided to take his art studies seriously, with the determination to express current social situations and issues through art. While his early works served as satiric portrayals of social issues through exaggerated and strange forms, recently he has focused on experimenting with materiality. Johnson uses the method of Color-Field Painting, which is a typical technique of Abstract Expressionism. This technique emphasizes the fluidity of paint as it is poured and dripped over the picture plane. The artist has actively used this autonomous fluidity of paint to develop his unique method. Very wet canvases are used to allow the pigments to soak into the surface naturally and to form layers, based on which he brings to life bizarre creatures that exist nowhere else. Johnson’s works have been collected by the global organizations, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art in New York, and Collection SOLO in Madrid.

애런 존슨(b. 1975)은 브루클린을 기반으로 활동하는 현대미술가로, 애리조나 대학에서 생물학을 전공한 뒤 뉴욕 헌터 대학(CUNY)에서 순수미술 석사과정을 마쳤다. 그는 대학 시절부터 노트에 기괴한 생물들을 그리거나 미술관을 자주 방문하는 등 취미로서 미술에 관심을 두고 있었다. 그러나 2001년 9.11 테러를 목도한 후 현 사회 상황이나 이슈를 예술로 표현하겠다는 결심 하에 본격적으로 미술 공부를 시작했다. 작가는 과장되고 기괴한 형태로 사회 이슈를 표현하여 풍자하였던 초기 작업을 지나, 최근에는 재료의 물질성에 대한 실험에 집중하고 있다. 그는 추상표현주의의 대표적 기법 중 하나인 컬러필드 페인팅(Color-Field Painting) 방식을 사용한다. 이 기법은 물감을 엎지르고 흘리는 방법으로서 물감의 유동성을 강조하는 기법으로, 애런은 물감의 자율적인 유동성을 적극적으로 활용하여 자신만의 작업 방식으로 발전시켰다. 물기를 가득 머금은 캔버스에 자연스럽게 염료가 스며들게 하여 물감이 층을 이루도록 하는데, 이로 인해 발생하는 형상을 토대로 다른 어디에도 없던 괴기스러운 인물들을 탄생시킨다. 그의 작품은 현재 뉴욕 현대 미술관(MoMA), 허드슨 밸리 현대 미술 센터(HVCCA), 컬렉션 솔로(Collection SOLO) 등 해외 주요 기관에 소장되어 있다.
