In the digital era today, photography has gained infinite multiplicity, according to which the real has been removed, leaving behind only spaces of semblance. Back Seungwoo (b. 1973) attempts to create diverse meanings by using the multiplicity of the photograph. At a time when the significance of the original has already vanished, he does not simply take photographs, but tries to realize painterly representation by turning the pictures into new images through synthesis. His early Real World I series combines images of world landmarks and Korean urban landscapes to create new compositions. The mixture of Korean downtown scenes and heterogeneous buildings in the picture-plane presents viewers with familiar but strange experiences. The artist arranges the images in his picture as if he were painting, thereby deconstructing the objectivity of photography. Through this transforming of ordinary documentations of life into unfamiliar documentations, Back is destroying the fundamental concept of photography known as “reality” and further expanding the meaning of the photograph.

오늘날과 같은 디지털화 시대에서 사진은 가상의 공간에서 실재가 제거된 무한의 복수성을 획득했다. 백승우 (b. 1973)는 이와 같은 사진의 복수성을 이용하여 다양한 의미 창출을 시도한다. 그는 이미 원본의 의미가 사라진 현 시점에 단순히 사진을 찍는 것이 아니라 합성을 통해 새로운 이미지로 만들어 냄으로써 회화적 재현을 실현하고자 했다. 그의 초기 작 연작은 세계 곳곳의 랜드마크와 한국의 도심풍경을 합성하여 새롭게 구성한 작품이다. 한국의 도심 풍경과 뒤섞인 이질적인 건물들로 인해 화면 속 이미지는 감상자에게 익숙하면서도 생소한 경험을 제공한다. 마치 그림을 그리듯이 사진 속의 이미지들을 배치하는 작가는 이를 통해 사진의 객관성을 해체한다. 이처럼 백승우는 삶의 평범한 기록을 낯선 기록으로 변형함으로써 ‘사실성’이라는 사진의 근본적인 개념을 파괴하고 사진의 의미를 더욱 확장하고 있다.
