Ji Yongho (b.1978-) uses old tires to make sculptures of jaguars, horses, sharks, bulls and their mutants. Through his sculptures of artificially mutated animals, the artist reveals how civilization manipulates nature, and point to the animals that are gradually vanishing from Earth due to the destructive actions of humans. This artist boldly transforms and distorts the faces and muscles of the animals so that they appear to be confronting or attacking humans. Their expressions, however, gazing into the distance in contrast to their pose, evoke a sense of sorrow, as viewers imagine the situation of animals losing their habitats and their power. In terms of form and technique, Ji’s works are rooted in traditional sculpture; however, they deviate from the traditional media of sculpture as they are made of old tires, symbolizing contemporary civilization. Recently he has focused more on the shapes, materials, colors and textures of his sculptures, while still maintaining the basic concept and form of his previous mutated animal works. Consequently, he has presented a new series with a different sense of formativeness, which he calls “New Mutant.” In place of the old tires, the main material of his previous works, he now uses a wide spectrum of media, including bronze, aluminum and 3D printing. The “New Mutant” series was created through a process of computer-based 3D drawing, modelling and printing. Taking advantage of the characteristics of new media and work methods, which facilitate the transformation of shapes, the artist has portrayed works of various sizes with increased precision. In this way, Ji hopes to expand his ranges of formativeness by overcoming the limitations of expression that he faced in his previous sculpture work.


지용호(b.1978-)는 폐타이어를 이용하여 재규어, 말, 상어, 황소와 같은 동물들과 이들의 변종(Mutant)을 조각으로 만들어낸다. 작가는 인위적으로 변이된 동물 조각을 통해 문명이 어떻게 자연을 조작하는지를 드러내며 인간의 파괴적 행위에 의해 점차 사라져 가는 동물들을 이야기한다. 작가는 동물의 얼굴과 근육을 과감히 변형, 왜곡하여, 인간에게 대항하듯 공격적인 자세를 취하도록 한다. 그러나 그들의 자세와는 상반되게 먼 곳을 그저 응시하는 표정은 삶의 터전을 빼앗겨 힘을 잃어가는 상황을 연상시키며 비애감을 자아낸다. 그의 작품은 형식과 기법에 있어 전통 조각에 뿌리를 두고 있으나, 현대 문명을 상징하는 폐타이어를 사용한다는 점에서 조각의 전통적인 매체를 탈피한다. 그는 최근에 기존의 변이된 동물 형태와 개념을 토대로 하면서도 조각의 형태, 재료, 색, 질감 등 본질적 특성에 보다 집중했다. 그는 그 결과로서 새로운 조형성을 담은 연작을 선보였는데, 이 연작을 ‘뉴 뮤턴트’ (New Mutant)라 명명했다. 이전까지의 작업에서 주 재료로 사용했던 폐타이어에서 벗어나 브론즈(Bronze), 알루미늄(Aluminum), 3D 프린트 등 폭넓은 매체를 작품 제작에 도입 및 활용한 것이다. ‘뉴 뮤턴트’ 연작은 컴퓨터 3D 작업을 기반으로 한 드로잉, 모델링, 3D 프린트 과정을 통해 탄생했다. 작가는 새로운 매체와 작업방식의 특징, 즉 물체 형태의 변형이 용이하다는 점을 활용하여 여러 크기의 작품을 보다 세밀하게 표현할 수 있었다. 이로써 지용호는 기존 조각 작업에서 마주했던 표현방식의 제약을 극복하며 자신의 조형세계를 확대하고자 한다.
