Kim Seong-cheol (b. 1980) presents exquisite white porcelain works crafted with white clay as the primary material, using a potter's wheel. His creations transcend the typical functional attributes of porcelain, morphing into a contemporary aesthetic combined with a formative language. Drawn to the principles and structures of everyday objects, Kim recalls the artistic potential of the oil lamps he encountered in his youth, integrating it into his work. His signature series, Untitled, delves into the latent capabilities of the “oil lamp” that, having lost its original function, is reminiscent of relics from the past. The oil lamp, which draws up fuel through its wick to produce a flame, illuminates the artist's envisioned world at the boundary between reality and fantasy, casting light and shadows. Through this, the artist captures in white porcelain the spontaneous images and moods that arise from life, evoking memories of a forgotten past and reminding us of life's inherent values. Simultaneously, he paves the way for the evolution of white porcelain by adopting diverse formative methods. For example, employing a technique called “face carving,” he trims the surface of the ceramic with a knife to create contours, maximizing mystique of his pieces through the varied shades produced by light refraction. Furthermore, reinterpretations based on his imagination—unique lids, handles, spouts, and foot rings—are seamlessly attached (assembled) to the body of the oil lamp, harmonizing the overall shape. Also notable, is Kim’s use of a wide variety of glazes. By skillfully using transparent, crystalline, celadon, and manganese glazes, he manipulates surface textures and color variations to articulate not just a singular, but an expanded spectrum of “white.” Thus, while staying true to Korean sentiments in terms of theme and material, Kim breaks free from traditional frameworks associated with porcelain works to establish his distinctive formative language.

김성철 (b. 1980)은 백토를 주재료로 삼아 물레로 빚은 정교한 백자 작업을 선보인다. 그가 만드는 백자는 실용성을 갖춘 백자의 매체적 특성에서 탈피해 현대적 미감이 더해진 조형언어로 새롭게 탄생된다. 일상 속 작은 기물의 원리와 구조에서 소재를 찾는 작가는 유년시절 우연히 발견한 등잔의 예술적 가능성을 떠올려 자신의 작업에 소환한다. 그의 대표작인 "Untitled" 연작은 본래 기능을 잃은 채 과거의 산물로 전락한 ‘등잔(Oil lamp)’의 잠재력을 탐구한다. 기름 연료를 심지로 끌어올려 불을 밝히는 등잔은 실제와 환상의 경계에서 빛과 그림자를 통해 작가가 만든 환영의 세계를 비춘다. 이로써 작가는 삶 속에서 우연하게 떠오른 심상과 분위기를 백자로 빚어내고 망각한 과거의 기억과 삶의 가치를 상기시킨다. 동시에 그는 다채로운 조형방식을 구축하여 백자의 발전 가능성을 도모하였다. 예컨대 도자의 표면을 칼로 다듬는 ‘면 깎기’ 기법으로 굴곡을 만들고 빛의 굴절에 따라 각기 다른 명암을 만들어내 신비로운 분위기를 극대화한다. 또한, 그의 상상력에 따라 재해석된 독특한 형태의 뚜껑, 손잡이, 굽, 주구 등이 등잔의 몸체에 ‘덧붙이기(조립)’ 되어 조화롭게 어우러진다. 다채로운 유약의 사용 역시 두드러지는 특징이다. 투명유, 결정유, 청자유, 망간유 등의 유약을 자유자재로 활용하여 표면 질감 및 색감의 변주를 꾀함으로써 한 가지가 아닌 확장된 범위의 ‘백(白)’을 표현한다. 이처럼 김성철은 주제와 소재 면에서 한국적 정서를 놓지 않고 본질을 유지하되, 기존의 백자 개념에서 벗어나 독창적인 조형언어를 확립하고 있다.
