1944-

Kwun Suncheol (b. 1944) interprets Korean modern and contemporary history through Korean people’s faces and the landscapes around us. Starting from his Self-Portrait series in the 1970s, he has continued his work on themes of human figures and landscapes, up to the present. Through the faces of elderly people in the Korean countryside, Kwun captures historical facts such as the Japanese occupation of Korea and the Korean War, common knowledge to all Koreans, and positions them in his works like personal stories. Having spent significant time in France since 1989, he uses the thick matière seen in Art Informel and lyrical narratives in his art to embody the afterimages of life. Detailed depictions are excluded from his face and landscape paintings, with only the materiality of the many layers of paint and their vivid hues remaining. Hence, the work of Kwun Suncheol, which transforms abstract concepts like traces of time, and the emotions of single individuals or many, into the visual subject matter of faces and landscapes, can be recognized as an extended form of work, positioned on the border between figurative and abstract.
