Lee Walchong (b. 1945) captures the scenery of Jeju Island and various kinds of human emotions. Lee is one of the representative artists of Korea who has the Gukjeon National Minister of Culture and Art Award (1974), the Korean Art Artist Award (1991), and the Woljeon Prize of Art (2001). The artist has worked in Seogwipo, Jeju Island, for 30 years, and here he consistently works on the series “Golden Mean of Jeju Living.” The term "Golden Mean," which appears in the title of Lee's works, means the middle way (majjihimā paṭipadā) in Buddhist thought, which is a life that sees nature and men as one and abandons obsession with anything and does not lean to one side. Through this term, he speaks for the world he ultimately wants to reach and tries to put it into his work. One of the noticeable features in his recent works is that there is a common poetic phrase, "It can happen. A Way of Life." It means that Lee should not make himself difficult for those suffering from frustration and depression due to the prolonged social distance but to take the reason of life and find a way to overcome this situation wisely. 이왈종(李曰鍾, b. 1945-)은 제주도의 풍광(風光)과 삶의 희로애락(喜怒哀樂)을 화폭에 담는다. 그는 국전 문화공보부 장관상(1974), 한국 미술 작가상(1991), 월전미술상(2001) 등을 수상한 바 있는 명불허전(名不虛傳) 대한민국을 대표하는 작가 중 한 명이다. 작가는 제주도 서귀포에서 30년간 작업하며 라는 시리즈를 이어오고 있다. 이왈종의 작품명에 등장하는 ‘중도’는 불교 사상에서의 중도(中道) 세계를 의미하며, 자연과 인간을 하나로 보고 그 어느 것에든 집착을 버리고 한쪽으로 치우치지 않는 삶을 뜻한다. 작품명을 통해 그는 궁극적으로 도달하고자 하는 세계를 언급하고, 이를 작업에 담고자 했다. 그는 2021년에 공개한 신작에서 공통적으로 “그럴 수 있다. 그것이 인생이다”라는 시적인 문장을 넣었는데, 이는 사회적 거리두기의 장기화로 인해 답답함과 우울로 낙심한 이들에게 자신을 힘들게 하지 말고, 삶의 이치를 그대로 받아들여 이 상황을 지혜롭게 이겨낼 여유를 찾아보자는 의미를 담고 있다. 그는 제주도의 정취와 특유의 낙천적인 유머를 작품에 담아 전달함으로써 많은 이들에게 위로를 전하고자 한다.
