Park Sukwon (b. 1942) opened new horizons in Korean sculpture breaking away from figurative sculpture with his abstract works. Experimenting with the tendency of Informel that focused on human existence around 1960s, Park embodied the providence of nature by accumulating the pure properties of nature-based materials such as stones, iron, and wood in the 1970s and 1980s. He aimed to create a new relationship and visualise the essence of things rather than view their superficial parts. He achieved this by accepting the physical properties or attributes of the materials, cutting them into units, and then restacking them. Since the early 1990s, Park has been working on the "Accumulation" series combining the human mind with his “accumulation” methodology. Park attempts to avoid the previous rigid structure using literary references to human beings, culture, and history. In addition, he has recently immersed himself in "material painting” by cutting hanji (traditional Korean paper) into geometric shapes and amassing them. Through “segmentation” and “conjugation,” Park represents the physical properties of various materials, and at the same time, he pursues harmony amongst nature as an artist and a man.

박석원(b. 1942)은 국전 사상 조각 분야 최연소 추천작가로 주목받으며, 1960년대부터 기존의 통념적인 구상주의 조각으로부터 탈피한 추상조각으로 한국 조각계의 새로운 지평을 열었다. 그는 1960년대 전후 인간의 실존에 주목한 앵포르멜 시기를 거쳐, 1970-80년대에는 돌, 쇠, 나무 등을 축적하는 형태로 자연의 섭리를 표현하였다. 소재의 속성을 파악해 이를 단위체로 절단한 후 다시 쌓는 과정을 반복하며 새로운 관계성을 만들어내고, 더 나아가 사물의 본질을 시각화하고자 하였다. 1990년대 초반 이후 현재까지 그는 축적의 방법론에 인간의 심의(心意)를 더한 시리즈를 작업하고 있다. 그는 구조물의 엄격성보다는 인간, 문화, 역사와 관련된 요소를 중시하며 구조를 개방하고 유연하게 하려는 시도를 담고 있다. 최근에는 한지를 기하학적 형태로 절단하여 축적하는 종이 작업에 몰두하며 한국적인 감성을 더한 ‘물성 회화’에 집중하고 있다. 이처럼 박석원은 다양한 재료를 넘나들며 ‘분절’과 ‘결합’의 방법론으로 재료가 지닌 고유한 물성을 중시하고, 창작자로서의 권위에서 벗어나 자연과의 조화와 합일을 추구한다.
