After graduating from Pratt Institute in 2006, Sam Friedman (b.1984-) worked for 5 years as an assistant in the studio of KAWS (b.1974-), a representative pop artist of the present generation. At the same time, he continued his research on unique patterns, shapes, textures and colors to depict natural landscapes. Starting with the "Beach" series, which stems from the experience of walking towards the sunset through a storm in 2008, the artist has presented works inspired by poetic landscapes such as pouring rain, sunset, and sunrise. His recent works are focused more on formal elements such as lines and colors and one can see that Abstract Expressionism, which spread mainly in New York in the 1950s, influenced them. They create a surreal atmosphere in which temporality and spatiality are ambiguous overall. The artist does not directly capture the natural landscape, but rather emphasizes the artist's pure sensibility and the sublime inherent in nature through abstract screen. Regarding this, he expresses the more existential concepts of nature, such as life, death, soul and the universal emotions of humans.

2006년 프랫 인스티튜트(Pratt Institute)를 졸업한 샘 프리드먼(b.1984-)은 현세대를 대표하는 팝아티스트인 카우스(KAWS, b.1974-)의 스튜디오에서 5년간 조수로 일하며, 자연 경관을 묘사함에 있어 자신만의 독특한 패턴, 모양, 질감 및 색채에 대한 연구를 지속해 왔다. 작가는 2008년 폭풍우를 뚫고 일몰을 향해 걸어간 경험에서 비롯된 "Beaches" 연작을 시작으로, 쏟아지는 빗발, 일몰, 일출 등 시적인 풍경에서 영감을 받은 작업을 발표했다. 선과 색채 등 형식적인 요소에 더욱 집중한 근작들은 1950년대 뉴욕을 중심으로 퍼진 추상표현주의의 영향이 두드러지며, 전체적으로 시간성과 공간성이 모호한 초현실적인 분위기를 연출하고 있다. 작가는 삶과 죽음, 영혼 등 자연에서 느낄 수 있는 보다 실존적인 개념과 인간의 보편적인 감정을 표현하기 위해, 자연 경관을 직접적으로 포착하는 대신 작가의 순수한 감성과 자연에 내제된 숭고함을 강조하는 추상적 화면을 선보인다.
