Sarah Kim (b. 1994) channels personal experiences of loneliness and anxiety into her distinctive, formative art. A Korean-American, Kim moved often, growing up in various regions of the United States and Canada. Having not been allowed the opportunity to fully integrate anywhere for a prolonged time, Kim found it challenging to establish her identity. For Kim, creating art serves as a means to express inner turmoil and elevate it to a sense of healing. Recently, she has shown unique canvas works, which involve painting multiple layers of acrylic onto old clothes that Kim cuts and reassembles in her characteristic style. The clothes she employs as her primary medium inherently carry the memories and traces of the shared past. By deconstructing and reconstituting the garments, Kim aspires to overlay the pains of reality with new memories. Her landscapes, infused with motifs reflecting childhood memories of roads, the sun, and flowers, evoke pure emotions. At the same time, they subtly hint at the lack of belonging and feelings of uncertainty experienced by Kim. The absence of any human figure in her artworks symbolizes the solitude she felt over the years. However, rather than focusing on internal feelings of loneliness, she opts to manifest her art through the vibrant colors and hopeful motifs characteristic of her cheerful artistic language. Scenes filled with hillsides, farms, and fences evoke the Midwestern regions of the US where she grew up and hint at moments of healing in her life through their serene and upbeat atmosphere. By constantly revisiting and reflecting on life experiences and constructing ceaseless narratives, Kim both expands the realm of painting through her unique approach and solidifies her identity as an artist.
