Born in London, Satch Hoyt (b. 1957) lives and works in Berlin. Hailing from an African-Jamaican background, he explores the African diaspora culture that originated in the tragic history of the slave trade between the 15th and 19th centuries, working in various genres, including installation, sculpture, painting, and drawing. Seeking to develop a new Black culture while retaining the memories of his ancestors, Hoyt uses materials associated with sound production like drumsticks, electric guitars, and vinyl. He assembles and composes sounds to produce sonically connected works. Examples include attaching hundreds of drumsticks to a wood panel in a design reminiscent of a sound wave and connecting tambourine fragments in the shape of a cross. Through his use of percussion instruments in large-scale installation works and combined with sounds from performances incorporating the long-standing African musical feature of polyrhythms to achieve a different kind of sense, he blends art and music in a contemporary take on tradition. Even as he creates this utterly new strand of African diasporan culture, Hoyt also produces sculptures and paintings that feature the Afro-comb—designed for the genetically tight curls of African hair—as a key symbol. He explores racial identity and offers a metaphor for resistance against discrimination that has drawn global attention.
