Woo Jaeghil, born in Kyoto, Japan, 1942, is a second-generation Korean abstract artist who pursued geometric abstraction. He has been working on visualising the immaterial element of "light" inspired by nature in a geometric form on the screen. He has been active as a member of “Époque,” an abstract art group in Gwangju and South Jeolla Province, and has consistently presented the "Rhythm" series and "Work" series since the early 1970s. In the early 1970s, at the beginning of the work, gradation was expressed by hands and palms without using tools, and achromatic colors were mainly applied. From the 1980s, tools such as brushes and masking tape were used, and in the 1990s, green, red, and brown were added to the screen to pursue changes in color tone. Since the 2010s, he has focused on color expression using various primary color and also presented experimental works using Korean paper. Starting with the Jeonnam Provincial Excellence Prize in 1970, he won a special prize for "Rhythm 76-2K" at the Korean Art Awards in 1976, participated in the main exhibition at the 1st Gwangju Biennale in 1995 and won the Popularity Award, and also was awarded 18th Moonshin Art Award in 2019. Woo pursues a consistent theme and composition of “light” but expands the scope of his work by presenting drawings, prints, collages, sculptures, and paintings in terms of material and form. He was also selected as one of the 100 representative Korean contemporary artists. Currently, his works are in the collections of prominent institutions such as the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul Museum of Art, Gwangju Museum of Art, and the Supreme Court.

1942년 일본 교토에서 태어난 우제길은 기하학적 추상을 추구한 한국 추상화단의 2세대 작가이다. 자연에서 영감을 받은 ‘빛’이라는 비물질적인 요소를 화면(畵面) 위에 기하학적인 형태로 시각화하는 작업을 해오고 있다. 그는 광주, 전남 지역의 추상미술 단체인 ‘에포크(Époque)’ 회원으로 활동하며 1970년대 초반부터 꾸준하게 '리듬(Rhythm)' 연작과 '작품(Work)' 연작을 선보였다. 화업 초기인 1970년대에는 도구가 아닌 손과 손바닥으로 그러데이션을 표현하였으며 주로 무채색을 사용하였다. 1980년대에 들어서면서부터 붓, 마스킹테이프 등의 도구를 이용하였고, 1990년대에 이르러서는 화면에 녹색, 적색, 갈색 등을 첨가하며 색조의 변화를 추구했다. 2010년대 이후에는 다양한 원색을 사용하며 색채 표현에 집중하였는데, 한지를 이용하여 실험적인 작업들을 선보이기도 했다. 우제길은 1970년 전남도전우수상 수상을 시작으로 1976년 한국미술대상전에서 ‘리듬 76-2K (Rhythm 76-2K)’으로 특별상 수상, 1995년 제1회 광주비엔날레 본전시 참여 및 인기상 수상, 2019년 제18회 문신미술상 수상하는 등 대외적으로도 작품성을 인정받은 바 있다. ‘빛’이라는 일관된 주제와 구성을 추구하나 소재나 형식적인 측면에서는 회화뿐만 아니라 드로잉, 판화, 콜라주, 조각 등을 선보이며 작업의 영역을 확장한 그는, 그 공로를 인정받아 한국미술평론가협회가 선정한 한국 현대미술을 대표하는 100인에 꼽히기도 했다. 현재 그의 작업은 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관, 광주시립미술관, 대법원 등 유수의 기관에 소장되어 있다.
