Gana Art

Under the theme Masters of Modern Chaesaekhwa, Gana Art presents an exhibition highlighting the monumental achievements of three artists who pioneered new horizons in the field and established profoundly original artistic worlds — Park Rehyun, Kim Kichang, and Park Saengkwang. Featuring over thirty major works by the three artists, the exhibition seeks to revisit the formal achievements and luminous culmination of modern Chaesaekhwa(Korean color painting) within the broader history of Korean modern art.

Amid the turbulent transformations of twentieth-century Korean art, each of these artists expanded the possibilities of traditional Korean painting through a distinct visual language of their own. Rather than merely inheriting past techniques or imitating Western artistic movements, they pursued, with remarkable conviction, the challenge of reinterpreting tradition in a modern context. In many ways, modern Chaesaekhwa truly began and evolved through their rigorous experimentation, ultimately reaching an unparalleled level of artistic accomplishment.

This exhibition focuses on the formal achievements of Park Rehyun, Kim Kichang, and Park Saengkwang, while reaffirming the decisive turning point they created in twentieth-century Korean art. Indeed, it was through these three artists that modern Chaesaekhwa emerged, developed, and eventually attained its highest expression. Their era marked the radiant pinnacle of modern Chaesaekhwa, and this exhibition presents the magnificent culmination of that artistic journey. Moving forward, Gana Art and the Gana Foundation for Arts and Culture will continue to reinterpret the practices of historically significant artists through their collection, while discovering organic connections between different artists and bodies of work, thereby expanding the art-historical significance of the collection itself.

가나아트는 《한국 현대 채색화의 정점》이라는 주제 아래, 이 분야의 위대한 영토를 개척하고 독창적인 세계를 완성한 세 명의 예술가— 우향(雨鄕) 박래현(朴崍賢, 1920-1976), 운보(雲甫) 김기창(金基昶, 1913-2001), 내고(乃古) 박생광(朴生光, 1904-1985)의 기념비적인 작업을 조명하는 전시를 개최한다. 세 작가의 대표작 30여 점을 선보이는 본 전시는 한국 현대 미술사에서 채색화가 도달한 조형적 성취와 그 찬란한 이정표를 확인하고자 하는 시도에서 출발한다.

20세기 한국 미술의 격변기 속에서 이들 세 작가는 각기 다른 독창적인 조형 언어로 전통 한국화의 지평을 넓히는 데 헌신하였다. 이들은 단순히 과거의 기법을 답습하거나 서구의 사조를 모방하는 데 그치지 않고, 전통의 현대적 변용이라는 화두를 온몸으로 밀고 나아갔다. 사실상 한국의 현대 채색화는 이들의 치열한 실험을 통해 비로소 시작되고 발전되었으며, 마침내 독창적인 예술적 성취의 최고점에 도달할 수 있었다.

이번 전시는 박래현, 김기창, 박생광의 조형적 성취에 주목하면서 이들이 20세기 한국 미술에 중요한 전환점을 만들어냈다는 점을 다시 한번 강조하고자 한다. 사실상 이 세 작가에 의해 현대 한국 채색화가 시작되고 발전되었으며, 그 최고점에 도달했기 때문이다. 이들의 시대는 한국 현대 채색화의 찬란한 정점이었으며, 이번 전시는 그 안에서 마침내 완성된 한국 채색화의 위대한 귀결을 보여준다. 앞으로도 가나아트와 가나문화재단은 소장품을 기반으로 잘 알려진 예술가들의 작품 세계를 새롭게 재해석하는 한편, 서로 다른 작가와 작업 사이의 유기적인 연결 지점을 발견하며 컬렉션이 지닌 미술사적 의미를 지속적으로 확장해 나갈 예정이다.
