Guideline(s)

“Guideline(s)”, a solo exhibition of Back Seungwoo who has asked fundamental questions about the photograph, is currently on view at Gana Art Hannam. It features the latest works by the artist, dealing with political issues as a subject. The show includes a reproduction of the world map hanging at a hotel in North Korea and enlarged parts of photos. These works raise questions about the realness of a photograph by revealing the invisible instructions and the power hidden in it. Especially noteworthy in this exhibition is that the artist attempted to make a pictorial transformation of photography. By painting different colors on the same photo, he intends to neutralize the guidelines in it. This exhibition will be a guideline for future works by unveiling a new spectrum of Back’s works.

사진이라는 매체에 대하여 도전적인 질문을 던져 온 백승우 작가의 개인전, 《Guideline(s)》가 가나아트 한남에서 열린다. 이번 전시에서 백승우는 북한의 호텔에 걸려 있는 세계지도를 재현한 작품, 북한의 신문 가판대 모형에 전시된 다양한 제스처의 손 사진 등 정치적 이슈를 소재로 한 신작 20여 점을 선보인다. 이로써 그는 사진에 담긴 보이지 않는 지시들, 그 안에 숨어있는 권력을 밝혀 사진의 진실성에 대하여 의문을 제기한다. 특히 이번 전시에서 주목할 점은 작가가 사진 매체 안에서의 변형을 꾀했던 이전까지의 작품과는 달리 사진 위에 채색을 하는 회화적 변용을 시도했다는 것이다. 동일한 사진에 각기 다른 색을 칠함으로써 원본이 전달하고자 했던 메시지를 차단하고, 사진에 내재된 가이드라인 그 자체를 무화 시키고자 한 것이라 할 수 있다. 이처럼 본 개인전은 같은 시기에 개최되는 2018 광주비엔날레에 출품할 작품과는 또 다른 스펙트럼의 신작을 공개하여 작가의 앞으로의 작업에 대한 지침, 즉 가이드라인이 되는 전시가 될 것이다.
