Byun Shiji
The Light and Wind of the Times

Gana Art is pleased to present a solo exhibition of Byun Shiji(1926-2013) titled featuring a unique painting style of yellow clay. Byun Shiji was born in Seogwipo, Jeju Island, and moved to Japan with his family at the age of six and graduated from the Western Painting Department of Osaka Art School in 1945. He moved to Tokyo at the age of 20 and began his career as a professional artist. He studied post-modernism in Japan, focusing on portrait and landscape in connection to light and color and conceived his painting style as his own way. Although he was a Korean artist, he was the youngest to win the highest award in 1948 at the exhibition ‘Gwangpunghoe’, Japan’s major art field. At the age of 24, he became the youngest winner and judge among the Japanese.

The exhibition features his works from his 38 years of his life in Jeju(1975~2013) as he returned to Jeju in 1975 when he was 50 years old. The artist introduces of defeating and evolution of yellow clay and the ‘Black Sea’ series which expresses Jeju’s ocean and land by choosing black as the color of connecting the East and the West.

Gana Art will refocus on Byun’s paintings from his years in Jeju completed with his own unique style of painting, and will provide comfort in mind and body and the noble spirit he pursues.

변시지
시대의 빛과 바람

가나아트는 황토빛의 독특한 화풍을 구현한 변시지(1926-2013)의 개인전 《시대의 빛과 바람》을 개최한다. 변시지는 제주 서귀포에서 태어나 여섯 살 때 가족과 일본으로 건너가 1945년 오사카 미술학교 서양화과를 졸업하였다. 그는 이후 스무살에 도쿄로 이주하여 본격적인 전업작가의 길로 들어서는데, 일본에서 후기인상주의를 공부하며 빛과 색채의 연관성을 인물화와 풍경화에 집중하여 본인의 화법으로 구상하였다. 그는 한국작가임에도 불구하고 1948년 당시 일본 최고의 중앙 화단인 ‘광풍회展’에서 최연소 최고상을 수상하고 24세에는 광풍회의 심사위원이 되어 일본인을 포함하여 최연소 수상자이자 심사위원을 역임한바 있다.

이번 전시는 38년간의 이루어진 그의 제주시절(1975~2013) 작업을 선보이는 자리이다. 황토빛 노란색이 탈법(脫法)과 진화를 거쳐 자신만의 화법으로 완성되는 주요 작품과 동서양을 연결하는 색으로 검정색을 선택하여 제주의 바다와 대지를 표현한 ‘검은바다’ 시리즈를 함께 선보인다.

가나아트는 이번 전시를 통해 제주로 귀향한 변시지가 그만의 독창적인 화법으로 완성한 회화를 재조명하고, 관람객들이 심신의 위로와 함께 그가 추구한 고결한 정신성을 찾아볼 수 있는 자리가 되기를 기대한다.
