Between Us

Gana Art is pleased to present 《Between Us》 at Gana Art Center and Gana Art Nineone, a solo exhibition for Chiharu Shiota who is an international artist from Osaka, Japan. As Chiharu unravels the inner human and introspection on uncertainty through her artworks, she does not confine herself to one specific area but rather deals with a variety of media such as drawing, sculpture, installation, and performing art. Chiharu’s fear of death from the childhood became worse after battling with cancer twice; therefore, Chiharu continues to explore her contemplation about life and death. Chiharu who projects the trauma of death in her work uses a human’s finiteness and its unsettling inner side as her main subject. The artist also interprets death as the new beginning rather than “the end”, and further continues to reflect on the dichotomous boundaries, personal existence and identity that exist in the contemporary era. One of Chiharu’s most representative series is the installation piece with thread skein forming a shape of human blood vessels throughout the space. Through the complex spider web of entangled threads in a space, she visually embodies not only the agony of life and death but also the exploration on existence. Furthermore, these threads refer to the numerous interrelated thoughts and the relationships with surroundings needed to confirm one self’s identity. In essence, Chiharu continues to explore the existence and the innerness through her thread works as well as sculptures reminiscent of cells containing everyday objects which recall her memories. As a place where you can appreciate Chiharu’s overall works of painting, drawing, sculpture and installation, this exhibition will be an excellent opportunity to follow her through the journey in search of the answer to the most fundamental questions a human being can have.

가나아트는 일본 오사카 출신의 국제적인 작가, 치하루 시오타(Chiharu Shiota, 1972-)의 《Between Us》 전시를 가나아트센터와 가나아트 나인원에서 동시에 개최한다. 치하루는 불확실성에 대한 인간의 내면과 성찰을 작품을 통해 풀어내는데, 드로잉, 조각, 설치와 퍼포먼스까지 그는 하나의 영역에 국한하지 않고, 다양한 영역의 미술을 다룬다. 어린 시절에 느낀 죽음에 대한 두려움은 두 번의 암 투병으로 더욱 확대되었고, 이를 계기로 그는 삶과 죽음에 대한 고민을 이어간다. 죽음에 대한 트라우마를 작업에 투영한 시오타는 인간의 유한함과 그에 따르는 불안한 내면을 작업의 소재로 삼았다. 또한 작가는 죽음을 단순히 ‘끝’으로 바라보는 것이 아니라, 새로운 시작으로 해석했으며 여기서 더 나아가 동시대에 존재하는 이분 법적인 경계와 개인 존재 그리고 정체성에 대한 성찰을 이어갔다. 시오타를 대표하는 연작 중 하나는 인간의 혈관을 형상화 한 실 타래를 공간 전체에 설치한 작업이다. 한 공간에 마치 거미줄처럼 복잡하게 뒤엉켜 있는 실을 통해 시오타는 삶과 죽음에 대한 고뇌뿐 아니라, 실존을 향한 탐구를 시각적으로 구현하였다. 또한 이 실들은 내면에서 서로 관계되는 수많은 생각과 스스로의 정체성을 확인하기 위해 필요한 주변과 관계들을 의미하기도 한다. 이처럼 시오타는 실을 활용한 작업과 더불어 세포를 연상시키는 조각들, 그의 기억을 상기시키는 일상적인 소품을 활용하여 존재와 내면에 대한 탐구를 지속하고 있다. 이번 전시는 시오타의 설치 작업뿐 아니라 회화, 드로잉, 조각 등 전반적인 작업을 총체적으로 감상할 수 있는 자리로, 작업을 통해 인간이 가질 수 있는 가장 근본적인 질문에 대한 해답을 찾아가고 있는 그의 여정을 따라가볼 수 있는 좋은 기회가 될 것이다.
