CHOCKABLOCK

Gana Art is pleased to present CHOCKABLOCK, a solo exhibition of Moon Hyeongtae(b. 1976). Moon is known for works probing life in self-portraits, portraits of family or lovers, and enigmatic, allegorical tableaus. This exhibition, the second collaboration between Gana Art and Moon, is expected to contain more mature insights from the artist by revealing more than 70 new works including paintings, sculptures, and installation work.

Moon expresses the inner world of human beings with strategies of distortion, exaggerated colors, and various elements in tightly compressed compositions to capture a life in which joys and sorrows coexist. One of the characteristics of Moon’s work is the yellow color and warmth surrounding the canvas. He has a routine of covering the canvas with a mixture of soil and water prior to painting, and all of the soil used in this work is brought from the place where Moon has lived or stayed. In this way, he intends to apply traces of life to his work. The composition of this exhibition begins with a space filled with Moon’s personal narratives, reminiscent of the artist’s studio, and continues with the story of relationships, society, and love. Gana Art hopes this exhibition will provide audiences a chance to follow Moon’s steps and take time to reflect on the path they have passed and complete their own story.

가나아트는 재치 있는 일상 표현을 통해 평범한 소재에 풍부한 서정과 동화적 해학을 깃들이는 작가, 문형태(Moon Hyeongtae, b. 1976)의 개인전 《CHOCKABLOCK》을 개최한다. 가나아트와 문형태의 두 번째 협업인 이번 전시는 회화와 조각 및 설치 작업 등 70여점의 신작을 공개하며 ‘관계’를 주제로 삶에 대한 논의에 집중해 온 작가의 한층 성숙해진 통찰을 담을 예정이다.

   문형태는 실존에 대한 고민이 담긴 자화상이나 가족, 혹은 연인과의 일상을 묘사한 화면을 통해 삶을 이야기하는 작가다. 그는 뒤틀린 인물 묘사나, 과장된 색채 사용, 다양한 요소를 한 화면에 압축적으로 구성하는 표현 방식을 통해 인간의 내면을 표현하고, 희로애락이 공존하는 삶을 화폭에 담는다. 문형태의 작업에서 일관되게 나타나는 특징 중 하나는 화면에 은은하게 감도는 황토 빛이다. 그는 도상을 그리기에 앞서 흙물로 캔버스를 물들이는 오랜 작업 습관을 지속하고 있는데, 이때 사용되는 흙은 모두 작가가 살았거나, 머물렀던 곳에서 가져온 것으로, 삶의 흔적을 작업에 입히고자 하는 의도를 담고 있다.

   이번 전시, 《CHOCKABLOCK》의 구성은 작가의 작업실을 연상시키며 개인적인 서사로 채워진 전시 공간에서 시작해 작가의 시선에서 바라본 사회, 타인과의 관계, 그리고 그 관계의 종착점인 사랑에 대한 이야기로 이어진다. 이 같은 전시의 흐름은 자기 자신, 나아가 인간의 본질을 탐구하는 데 전념해 온 문형태의 여정을 짐작케 할 것이다. 가나아트는 이번 전시를 관람하는 이들이 문형태의 행보를 따라, 저마다 지나온 길을 되짚어보고 자신만의 이야기를 완성하는 시간을 가져보기를 기대한다.
