Gana Art presents 𝘍𝘢𝘤𝘦, a solo exhibition by Choi Jongtae (b. 1932–), a pioneer of Korean modern sculpture. This exhibition focuses on the 𝘍𝘢𝘤𝘦 series, a subject that has occupied a central place throughout the artist’s long career. Among the figures and human body sculptures he has consistently explored since his early years, the face stands out as a significant motif — serving as an expression of human inner nature, a commentary on contemporary realities, and a vehicle for formal experimentation. Choi has remarked that, rather than treating the face as merely a part of the body, he strives to complete it as a fully autonomous sculptural form, and that he remains in the midst of this ongoing pursuit. Over the course of this journey, the 𝘍𝘢𝘤𝘦 series has shown numerous variations in both material and form, giving rise to a wide range of interpretations.

Across more than half a century of his facial sculptures, the overarching theme that runs through his work is “humanity.” Choi does not work from specific models; most of his faces are created from the artist’s inner vision. He once stated, “The faces I create differ greatly from real faces. What I wish to depict are good people, kind people, and admirable people.” Believing that an inherent goodness exists within human beings, Choi aspires for his sculptures to embody a higher state of this goodness, and he continues his practice in pursuit of that ideal.

가나아트는 한국 현대 조각의 선구자, 최종태(Choi Jongtae, b. 1932-)의 개인전 《Face》를 개최한다. 이 전시는 최종태의 지난 화업에서 가장 많은 비중을 차지하고 있는 두상에 집중한다. 작가가 작업 초기부터 꾸준히 다뤄 온 인물과 인체 조각 중 얼굴은 인간의 심성 표현이거나 시대적 발언이며, 조형 실험의 도구였다는 점에서 주목할 만하다. 얼굴 작업에 대해 그는 인체의 한 부분이 아닌 하나의 조형으로서 완전한 얼굴을 완성하고 싶고, 여전히 그 과정 중에 있다고 밝힌 바 있다. 이 여정에서 <얼굴> 연작은 소재나 형태 면에서 수많은 변이를 보였고, 이에 따른 다양한 해석이 존재해왔다.

반 세기가 넘는 얼굴 조각의 역사에서 수많은 작업을 관통하는 주제는 ‘인간됨’이다. 최종태는 특정 모델을 두고 작업하지 않는다. 그의 얼굴 조각 대부분은 작가의 심상에 따라 만들어진 것이다. 그는 “내가 그리는 얼굴은 실재의 얼굴과는 많이 다르게 되어 있다. 나는 좋은 사람, 착한 사람, 훌륭한 사람을 그리고 싶은 것”이라고 말했다. 인간의 내면에 선성(善性)이 존재한다고 믿는 최종태는 그의 조각이 높은 단계의 선성을 취하기를 희망하며, 이를 위한 작업을 지속하고 있다.
