Fine Art Photography– Rising Light

Gana Art presents a solo exhibition by Chong Jaekyoo, a photographer and a visual artist. In the 1980s he studied at the University of Paris, and devoted the study of Western art theories that brought forth form-based, art-specific knowledge: Malevich’s Suprematism, Cubism, and Mondrian’s Neoplasticism. Jaekyoo Jung has explored new visual perception modeling genres based on photographs. He has shown ‘formative photography’ based on experience as a ‘new perception subject’ beyond the limited area of ​​’photorealistic reproduction’. He denies the replicability and plurality of photographs, dismantles the identity of instantaneousness and recordability. And then focuses on the perception of space-time structure of images rather than the literary imagination which is evoked from messages or events delivered by images in photographs. For example, he cuts and rearranges pictures of Korea’s high – rise buildings and sculptures such as the Grand Palace of Gyeongju, Daeungungjeon, Seokgatap, Dabotap, and Stone Lion. The image which is completed through the process of this segmentation is presented as a new photographic language. In other words, the act of cutting and combining images of photographed images can be called not only the image of time and space defined in the screen but also the ‘decoupage’. In this exhibition, the audience will be able to appreciate various works created through the deep insight of the artist about photography.

조형 사진- 일어서는 빛

가나아트는 조형사진작가 정재규의 개인전을 개최한다. 그는 1980년대에는 파리 1대학에서 수학하며 러시아 전위 미술 운동가인 말레비치의 절대주의(Suprematism)와 몬드리안의 기하학적 추상화 등 서양 미술이론 연구에 전념하였으며, 1990년 초부터 이론 연구를 뒤로 하고 본격적인 조형사진 작업을 시작하였다. 사진을 주요 매체로 한 새로운 시지각(視知覺) 조형 장르를 탐구한 정재규는 ‘사실적 재현’이라는 사진의 국한된 영역을 벗어나 ‘새로운 지각 대상으’로서의 체험에 기반을 둔 ‘조형사진’을 선보여 왔다. 그는 사진의 복제가능성과 복수성을 부정하고 순간성과 기록성이라는 정체성을 해체하여, 사진 속 이미지가 전달하는 메시지나 사건에서 불러일으키는 문학적 상상력 보다는 이미지가 가지는 시공간 구조의 지각화에 집중한다. 예컨대, 그는 경주 불국사의 극락전, 대웅전, 석가탑, 다보탑, 돌사자상 등과 같은 한국의 고건축이나 조형물을 찍은 사진들을 자르고 재배열하여 추상적이고 구성적인 화면을 만들어 낸다. 이러한 분절과 재구성의 과정을 통해 완성된 이미지는 시공간적 제한으로 인한 사진의 고정된 시각에서 벗어나며 새로운 사진언어로서 제시된다. 즉, 사진을 찍고 인화한 이미지들을 자르고 조합하는 행위는 화면 속 정해진 시공간의 이미지뿐 아니라, 작가의 사적인 기억과 역사적 사건이 개입된 ‘시간의 올짜기’라고도 할 수 있다. 이를 통해 그는 기계적 이미지들의 극단적 이용 및 실리주의와는 대칭되는 미학적이며 지각적인 사진의 위상을 찾고, 이러한 조형사진을 통해 인간과 세계 사이의 균형을 찾고자 한다. 이번 전시에서는 사진이라는 매체에 대한 작가의 깊은 통찰을 통해 만들어진 다양한 작업을 감상할 수 있을 것이다.
