Gana Art presents a retrospective exhibition of the late Chun Kookkwang(1945-1990). Chun, who always maintained a sober and sincere attitude towards sculpture, constantly pursued the issue of mass—something that is inescapable when dealing with the materials of sculpture. Through the acts of gathering and stacking materials, the artist channeled his attention toward structures within the mass of materials and tried to reveal such internal structures as shapes by re-structuralizing the material. The retrospective is a contemporary re-illumination of the artist’s fourth solo exhibition, Inner Mass – Matter 0.419㎥, which was held in Japan in 1986. By ruminating on the former exhibition, which showed methods of constructing the same volume with different material under the limited condition of 0.419㎥, the exhibition will bring into relief the contemporary aspect of the artist, who explored the concept of “sculpture as a phenomenon” and the infinite possibilities of shape. In addition, by introducing the diverse Inner Mass series, which shares the same theme, Plane Division, which serves as a prelude for this series, and Freedom – I and You and Mes (1989), which was one of his last works, at a single venue, it will examine the artist’s oeuvre at its prime from a new perspective. Focusing on the contemporaneity of Chun’s sculptures, this exhibition will also serve as an opportunity to cherish the memory of the artist, while newly interpreting and evaluating his achievements from our standpoint today.

0.419㎥의 물상

가나아트는 작고 작가 전국광(1945-1990)의 회고전을 개최한다. 조각에 대한 진지하고 성실한 자세를 견지했던 전국광은 조각의 재료가 필연적으로 가질 수 밖에 없는 성질인 매스의 문제에 천착했다. 그는 재료를 모으고 쌓는 행위와 쌓아 올리는 행위를 통해 물질의 덩어리 안에 내재한 구조에 관심을 쏟았고 물질을 재구조화 하여 내부 구조를 형태로 드러내고자 했다. 이번 회고전은 1986년에 일본에서 진행된 전국광의 네 번째 개인전 «매스의 내면-0.419㎥의 물상»을 동시대적 시각으로 재조명한 전시다. 0.419㎥라는 제한적인 조건 하에서 각기 다른 물질이 동일한 용적을 구축하는 방식을 보여주었던 기존 전시를 반추함으로써 “현상으로서의 조각” 개념과 형태의 무한한 가능성을 탐구했던 작가의 현대적인 면모를 부각한다. 이외에도 같은 문제 의식을 공유하는 다양한 ‹매스의 내면› 시리즈 작품들과 이 연작의 단초를 발견할 수 있는 ‹평면 분할›, 그리고 거의 마지막 작품에 해당하는 ‹자유-나와 너희들 그리고 나들›(1989)을 한자리에 소개함으로써 작품이 무르익었던 시기의 작품 세계 전반을 새로운 관점에서 살핀다. 그의 조각이 보여주는 현대성에 주목해보고자 하는 본 전시는 작가 전국광을 추모하고, 그가 일군 업적을 현 시점에서 새롭게 해석, 평가하는 자리가 될 것이다.
