Gana Art Nineone is pleased to present, 《Coexistence》, on view from December 29th, 2020 until January 24th, 2021 to show the context of Korean contemporary art history. The title ‘Coexistence’ symbolizes the presence of Kim Kulim, Kim Tschangyeul, Kim Whanki, Lee Ufan, Chun Kwangyoung under one roof who left a great mark in Korean art history from the 1960s to the 2000s. Although their period, main theme, and aesthetics vary, the five artists have communicated with each other in the flow of Korean contemporary art history by putting their works in one place.

Kim Whanki is the first generation artist of Korean abstract painting. He expressed traditional images with modern sensitivity and recreated Korean tradition in a modern form. Kim Tschangyeul is known for his ‘water drop’ painting. He represented the pain and the wound of Korean modern history with hyper realistic waterdrops since 1970. His work aims at the world of zen enlightenment and ideas through repetition of shapes. Lee Ufan, who has had a great influence on Korean modernism, is an artist who combines the Eastern thought and Western philosophy with a formative language of minimalism. He is an artist who globalized “Mono-ha” and oriental abstraction. Kim Kulim shows experimental work as the leader of the Korean avant-garde art in the 1960s and 1970s. He has built his own unique field by challenging unfamiliar genres of art including land art, conceptual art, performance, and video art. Chun Kwangyoung creates a unique painting with three-dimensional aspects by repeatedly arranging triangular pieces wrapped in Korean paper in a structural form.

As such, the featured 5 artists are the figures who have created their own wave and impact by expressing their identity as Korean artists without conforming to the contemporary art scene centered around Western countries. Their traces in Korean contemporary art history, such as their exploration of Korean abstract beauty, the application of oriental thought and diversification of materials, still have a strong impact on the later studies. By re-examining their universe, the visitors would gauge the contemporary art scene and explore its meaning behind. This exhibition will be a great opportunity to acquire and coexist with the artists’ spirits and tenacity throughout the year of 2021.

공존(共存)

가나아트 나인원은 2020년의 마지막 전시이자 2021년의 첫 기획전으로, 한국 현대미술사의 맥락을 짚어보는 《공존(共存)》전을 선보인다. 본 전시의 제목인 ‘공존’은 문자 그대로 1960년대부터 2000년대까지 한국 미술사에 커다란 족적을 남긴 김구림, 김창열, 김환기, 이우환, 전광영 등 5인의 작품이 한 공간 안에 놓여 있음을 의미한다. 비록 각 작가의 활동 시기, 주제, 미학은 다르지만, 그들의 작품을 한데 모음으로써 한국 현대미술사의 흐름 속에서 그들이 어떻게 교감하고 있었는지를 보여주고자 한다. 

김환기(1913-1974)는 한국 추상미술의 선봉에 선 1세대 작가로서 대한민국을 대표하는 작가이다. 그는 전통적 이미지를 현대적 감수성으로 전환시킨 작가로, 한국의 자연과 전통 기물을 모던한 형태로 재창조했다. ‘물방울 화가’로 대중에 알려진 김창열(1929-2021)의 작품은 극사실 기법을 일관되게 사용한 선구적인 사례에 해당되며, 내용 면에 있어 그는 형상의 반복을 통한 선적 깨달음과 같은 관념의 세계를 지향했다. 모노파(物派), 동양적 추상을 세계화한 작가인 이우환(b. 1936-)은 미니멀리즘의 조형 어휘에 동양적 사고와 서양 철학을 세련되게 접목시켰다. 김구림(b. 1936-)은 1960-70년대에 한국 아방가르드 예술의 선봉에서 실험적인 작업을 선보인 작가로 대지미술, 개념미술, 퍼포먼스, 비디오 아트에 이르기까지 당대로서는 낯선 장르에 도전하며 그만의 독자적인 영역을 구축해 왔다. 마지막으로, 전광영(b. 1944-)은 한국 전통 한지로 감싼 삼각형 조각들을 일정한 구조로 반복적으로 배열하여, 평면과 입체를 오가는 특유의 형태를 구현한다.

이와 같이 본 전시에 참여한 작가들은 서양 중심의 현대미술에 경도되지 않고, 한국 미술의 정체성을 발현시켜 주체적인 흐름을 만들어간 인물들이다. 한국적 추상미에 대한 탐구, 동양 사상의 적용, 소재의 다각화 등 그들이 한국 현대미술사에 남긴 족적은 현재까지도 후학에 거대한 영향을 끼치고 있다. 이들의 작품세계를 재조명함으로써 한국 현대미술의 현재와 그 의미를 가늠해 볼 수 있을 것이다. 또한 이번 전시를 통해 그들의 안주하지 않는 도전 정신과 집념이 2021년 한 해와 공생공존(共生共存)하며 영감을 주기를 기대한다.
