Gana Art presents Painting, a solo exhibition of David Quinn (b. 1971), an Irish artist who creates multi-layered screens embedding the process of creation and time for contemplation. This exhibition is his second collaboration with Gana Art after Quinn’s first exhibition at Gana Art Sounds in 2019. This exhibition brings together a new series created in 2022 at the Metropolitan Fukujusou Residency in Kyoto, Japan, as well as large-sized works he has recently endeavored. Furthermore, Gana Art refocuses on Quinn’s artistic journey that continues calmly as meditating.

As Quinn quotes, each of his works exists independently but also being composed as a “silent poetry” which is constantly reborn as a combination with new resonance and meaning. Quinn’s artistic process of layering paint like stratum and naturally scraping or smearing the layers was inspired by the Japanese philosophy of wabi・sabi(わび・さび) and Zen Buddhism, which formulate the basis of Japanese aesthetics. The corners of his works are gently worn, and the color faded, allowing us to imagine the time he has experienced. By allowing the flow of time as it is, Quinn projects the movement of the body, drawing lines and dots as well as the emotional interpretations of his life into his work. In this process of embodying the attitude of life that reflects on oneself without embellishment or exaggeration through abstraction, Quinn invites viewers to the moment of meditation he experienced.

가나아트는 창작의 과정과 사색의 시간이 고스란히 담긴 다층적인 화면을 완성하는 아일랜드 출신의 작가 데이비드 퀸(David Quinn, b. 1971)의 개인전 《Painting》을 개최한다. 본 전시는 2019년 가나아트 사운즈에서 있었던 퀸의 국내 첫 번째 전시 이후 4년 만에 열리는 것으로, 전시명과 동명의 연작인 <Painting>을 공개하는 자리다. 2022년 일본 교토의 Metropolitan Fukujusou Residency에서 제작한 신작 및 새롭게 시도하는 큰 사이즈의 작업들을 다양하게 선보임으로써, 마치 명상을 하듯 고요히 이어지는 퀸의 예술적 여정을 재조명하고자 한다.

‘조용한 시(silent poetry)’를 쓰고 있다는 작가의 말처럼, 본 전시의 출품작들은 각각 단독으로 존재하는 동시에 한 편의 시를 구성하는 낱말들처럼 끊임없이 새로운 울림과 의미를 지닌 조합으로 재탄생한다. 두꺼운 지층처럼 물감을 겹겹이 쌓고, 물감층을 자연스럽게 긁어내거나 번지게 하는 퀸의 작업 과정은 일본 미학의 근간을 이루는 와비・사비(わび・さび)와 선불교 사상의 영향을 받았다. 그가 지나온 시간을 짐작케 하듯 그의 작품 모서리는 부드럽게 마모되고 색이 바랬다. 퀸은 시간의 흐름을 그대로 받아들이면서, 선을 내리긋고 점을 찍는 신체의 움직임과 그의 삶에 녹아 있는 투박하지만 따뜻한 정서를 작업에 투영한다. 꾸밈이나 과장됨 없이 자신을 온전히 바라보는 삶의 태도를 추상화로 구현하는 과정에서 작가가 경험했던 명상의 순간을 관객이 함께 느낄 수 있기 바란다.
