Park Yungnam
Day and Night

Gana Art is pleased to announce Park Yungnam (b. 1949)’s solo exhibition, Day and Night. Park explores the origins of nature through abstraction composing his picture-planes only with colors, rather than representing figures. Also known as the “finger painting artist,” Park makes this exploration with the most primitive tool—his hands. His solo exhibition will feature a series of black and white paintings which the artist imprinted on the public with. In previous works, black and white existed as part of a regular yet geometric pattern, divided by the grid, a line that splits the canvas. But the grid in the new works is crushed, and the boundary between the colors collapses and interrupts each other. The title of this exhibition, “Day and Night,” metaphorically refers to his way of working starts painting at sunrise and stops at sunset to capture light on his canvases, and also refers to his attitude toward art in pursuit of change for more than 50 years without being complacent. His works are owned by National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Korea, Seoul Museum of Art, Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, and Seoul National University Museum of Art, as well as global institutions such as the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art.

Day and Night

가나아트는 손가락을 사용해 화폭에 광대한 자연을 옮겨내는 추상화가 박영남(朴英男, b. 1949)의 개인전, 《Day and Night》를 개최한다. 이번 전시는 2019년 가나아트센터에서의 개인전에서 선보였던 다채로운 색의 표현이 특징적인 <Monet before Me> 연작에 이어 그가 최근 몰두하고 있는 작업의 일면을 공개하는 자리가 될 것이다. 해가 뜨면 작업을 시작해 해가 지는 시간이 되면 멈추고, 전등을 켜지 않은 채 작업실에 들어오는 햇빛에 의존하여 작업을 하는 박영남에게 ‘자연’은 작업의 주제이자 영감의 원천이라 할 수 있다. 본 전시의 제목인 《Day and Night》는 일출과 일몰이라는 자연의 시간에 맞춰 작업을 이어가는 그만의 방식을 은유하는 것인 동시에 50여 년의 화업을 이어오며 현재에 안주하지 않고 끊임없이 변화를 거듭하는 그의 예술을 대하는 자세에 대한 언급이기도 하다. 박영남은 1973년 서울대학교 미술대학 서양화과를 졸업한 이래로 꾸준한 전시와 작품 활동을 통해 자신만의 회화 세계를 구축하며 한국 미술계에 유의미한 궤적을 남기고 있는 작가이다. 이에 그의 작품은 그 미술사적 가치를 인정받아 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관, 경기도 미술관, 서울대학교 미술관과 같은 국내 주요 미술기관은 물론 코넬대학교 미술관 등의 해외 기관에도 소장되어 있다.
