Gana Art LA presents Tale of Tales, a solo exhibition by Eddie Kang (b. 1980), who has consistently conveyed messages of happiness and hope through his work. Kang has long depicted what he calls a “Happy Place,” a space of respite in a highly individualistic contemporary society where one can pause and reconnect with long-forgotten senses of innocence. The Happy Place is a world where malice does not exist—an ideal state Kang envisions and visualizes through his work. This space is inhabited by a range of characters who appear throughout Kang’s practice, conveying the healing potential and positive energy inherent in art. The works reflect a desire for moments of rest and healing amid the fatigue of contemporary life.

Tale of Tales highlights Eddie Kang’s artistic world through characters and narratives that resonate widely, revealing his artistic universe through the stories each character carries. Throughout the exhibition, the works feature a range of characters, including Loveless, inspired by a dog the Kang once raised; Yeti, a guardian figure created to comfort a child experiencing loss; robots that symbolize the negative emotions of urban life; and an elephant character newly introduced in Kang’s recent works. As the title of the exhibition suggests, these narratives do not converge into a single storyline; rather, they are placed side by side or intersect within the exhibition space, forming a broader narrative landscape.

Eddie Kang’s world, where kindness and hope transcend malice and despair, aligns with Kang’s artistic commitment to practicing goodness and seeking hope in everyday life. The exhibition invites moving beyond simply dreaming of happy tales toward creating one’s own “Happy Place.”

가나아트 LA는 행복과 희망의 메시지를 지속적으로 건네 온 에디강(b.1980-)의 개인전 《Tale of Tales》를 개최한다. 작가는 개인주의가 팽배한 현대사회에서 잠시 숨을 고르는 휴식의 공간이자 잊고 지낸 순수한 감각을 되찾는 공간인 ‘해피 플레이스(Happy Place)’를 그려 왔다. 해피 플레이스는 악의가 존재하지 않는 세계, 즉 작가가 지향하는 이상적인 상태를 시각화한 개념이다. 이 공간에는 다양한 캐릭터들이 등장하며, 이들은 작가의 작품 전반에 걸쳐 예술이 지닌 치유의 가능성과 긍정적인 에너지를 전한다. 그 안에는 현실 속에서 지친 현대인들이 잠시 머물며 휴식과 치유의 시간을 보낼 수 있기를 바라는 작가의 마음이 담겨 있다.

《Tale of Tales》는 캐릭터의 서사를 매개로 관람객과 공명해 온 에디강의 작업 세계를 조명하는 전시다. 전시장 곳곳에는 작가가 실제로 기르던 강아지를 바탕으로 한 러브리스(Loveless), 상실을 겪은 아이를 위로하기 위해 탄생한 수호자 예티(Yeti), 도시의 부정적 감정을 상징하는 로봇, 그리고 본 전시에서 새롭게 선보이는 코끼리 캐릭터까지, 각기 다른 서사들을 가진 존재들이 등장한다. 전시의 제목인 ‘이야기들의 이야기(Tale of Tales)’가 말하듯, 이들의 서사는 전시장에서 나란히 놓이기도 교차하기도 하며 하나의 세계를 형성한다.

선함과 희망이 악함과 절망을 넘어서는 에디강의 세계는 일상 속에서 선함을 실천하고 희망을 찾고자 하는 작가의 예술적 태도와도 맞닿아 있다. 전시를 통해, 에디강의 세계에서 선하고 행복한 이야기를 꿈꾸는 것을 넘어 각각의 해피 플레이스를 만들어 볼 수 있기를 기대한다.
