Edmund de Waal
rain diary

Gana Art is pleased to present rain diary, a solo exhibition by Edmund de Waal (b. 1964). Across his practice, de Waal addresses the visual poetry of collecting and archiving, among other subjects. Materiality, migration, and the memory that objects hold have long shaped his work, which takes the form of installations of poetically arranged porcelain vessels. He has exhibited at the British Museum, the Jewish Museum, New York and the Royal Academy of Arts, among others, and his work is in the collections of leading institutions worldwide, including the V&A Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Rijksmuseum. Held four years after his first exhibition at Gana Art Center in 2022, rain diary is de Waal’s second exhibition with the gallery, presenting the eponymous work rain diary alongside thirteen further works dating from 2025 to 2026.

rain diary extends de Waal’s long-standing preoccupation with the history and memory held in objects, taking in home and sanctuary, people, the migration of objects, and poetry. The title work, rain diary, comprises 118 celadon-glazed vessels together with 14 small porcelain boxes holding fragments of porcelain and silver. Arranged on long, narrow shelves stacked in tiers within a white vitrine, vessels in white and blue-grey vary in size and form, each finding its own rhythm. The exhibition also features works in black porcelain, including a dramatic new series titled Coptic Light, where black marble from Kilkenny in Ireland is set alongside pieces of silver, and precious beyond measure, where Wedgwood black basalt shards are arranged next to shards of Song Dynasty (960–1279) porcelain. The latter takes its title from the writings of the Joseon literatus Yi Ha-gon (1677–1724) on his 1709 visit to the Bunwon kilns, suggesting something of de Waal’s long-held interest in Korea.

rain diary draws its title from the lyrical poem of the same name by Li-Young Lee, an American poet born in Indonesia. The poem addresses the loss of his father — a Chinese political prisoner in Indonesia, an exile in the United States — and his complex relationship to place and grief. The poem is an elegy for his father, and its fragmentary images of prison camps, boats and trains carry traces of migration and exile. For de Waal, who has spoken of migration, return, and loss, this exhibition is itself a homecoming to Korea. He recalls the postcard of a white Korean tea bowl that hung above the potter’s wheel in his very first studio. Its whiteness was plural, he says — not a single colour but one hue turning into another — and to come near it he had to reach for poetry. “My making and my writing is one thing,” as he puts it. “Pots turn into words, and words turn into pots.” Language, then, is not a way of describing porcelain but a form of it: porcelain is his language of migration and return. That postcard was the beginning of a long journey through the memory and history of porcelain, and de Waal now returns to Korea, bringing porcelain and poetry with him. The exhibition is an invitation to walk his journey with him, and to reflect together on the migrations and returns he has passed through.

rain diary

영국 박물관(British Museum), 유대인 박물관(Jewish Museum, New York), 영국 왕립미술원(Royal Academy of Arts) 등에서 개인전을 가졌으며, 빅토리아 앤 알버트 박물관(V&A Museum), 로스앤젤레스 카운티 미술관(Los Angeles County Museum of Art), 암스테르담 국립미술관(The Rijksmuseum) 등 세계 유수의 기관이 그의 작품을 소장하고 있다. 2022년 가나아트센터에서 개최된 첫 번째 개인전 《their bright traces》가 2013년부터 2021년까지의 작업을 망라한 전시였다면, 4년 만에 가지는 두 번째 개인전 《rain diary》는 근 2년간 천착해 온 최근작들을 선보인다.

(My making and my writing is one thing. Pots turn into words, and words turn into pots)”는 그의 말처럼, 그에게 언어는 도자를 설명하는 도구를 넘어 도자 그 자체가 되기도 한다.
