Shape Memory

Gana Art is pleased to announce Shape Memory, the first solo exhibition in Asia of Brooklyn-based artist Ernesto Buros (b.1979). The exhibition title Shape Memory, a term that indicates memory metals retaining their original shapes by external forces such as heating, references Burgos’ distinctive visual approach that captures the movements of gravity-defying forms and their transformation dynamics. Burgos’ earlier experiments recall ceramic sculpture by Peter Voulkos and the twisted sculptural forms of John Chamberlain. For Ernesto Burgos’ ongoing experiments in recent years, he has continued to make a series of wall-based sculptures from industrial materials such as cardboard and plywood by bending, tearing, and cutting them. The artist would also glue them with wax and resin repeatedly until the abstraction evolved into a fully realized three-dimensional form. As the coated liquid fiberglass takes some time to harden, the fluid forms of these independent works continue to move for some time after he sets them. This is a process to capture a mid-motion form caught in a state of suspension, which is partly a product of chance. Also transcending the traditional constraints of contemporary sculpture and artistic mediums, the show unveils a selected presentation of Burgos’ organically shaped works existing as flowing forms.

Shape Memory

가나아트는 현재 뉴욕 브루클린을 기반으로 활동하는 작가 에르네스토 버고스(Ernesto Burgos, b. 1979-)의 아시아 첫 번째 개인전, 《Shape Memory》를 개최한다. 전시명 ‘Shape Memory’는 열과 같은 외부 자극에 노출되었을 때 특정 물질이 자발적으로 원래의 형상으로 돌아가는 형상기억을 뜻하는 단어로, 형태와 구조가 재구성된 오브제의 움직임을 포착하는 버고스의 예술세계를 암시한다. 곡선을 따라 유기적인 형태로 이어지는 그의 조각은 도예가 피터 불코스(Peter Voulkos, 1924-2002)의 도자 조각, 존 체임벌린(John Chamberlain, 1927- 2011)의 자동차 금속 부품으로 만든 역동적인 조각 등 미국 추상표현주의의 대표적인 조각작품을 연상시킨다. 아울러 최근 몇 년간 이어오고 있는 ‘벽면 조각’(wall-based sculpture) 작업에서 버고스는 합판, 마분지 등의 다양한 산업용 재료를 부수거나, 찢거나, 구부리는 방식으로 자유롭게 변형하고, 밀랍과 레진 등의 접착물로 입체적인 형태를 고정했다. 이때 판지의 코팅에 사용된 액체 유리섬유는 완전히 굳기까지 다소 시간이 걸리며 작가가 처음 형태를 잡은 후에도 오랫동안 천천히 움직이기 때문에, 그의 작품은 일시적인 정지 상태에서의 우연한 순간을 포착한 결과물이라 할 수 있다. 작가는 이번 개인전을 통해 재료 고유의 물성과 매체의 경계를 허무는 유기적인 작업을 선보임으로써 새로운 각도로 현대 조각의 가능성을 탐구하고자 한다.
