Ethan Cook’s work, which looks like an abstract painting, upset viewers’ expectations because paint, the basic elements of painting, was not used. he arranges colorful canvases made from the loom and colored thread instead of a brush and paint by sewing it and attaching it to the frame. His work requires a long period of manual labor since weaving is an essential part. So, if you scrutinize the work, you would find evidence of handcrafted work, such as the pulls, knots, runs. Interestingly, the artist identifies himself as appropriation artists, like Richard Prince and Sherrie Levin, who adopt existing artworks or a ready-made object as the subject of their works. Thus, under the concept of appropriation, the artist conceived the work within the color category supplied by the cotton manufacturer and determined the size of the work according to the width of the loom. With this, he focuses not on the artist himself but on replicating an abstract painting or a canvas, which is a material of traditional painting. Therefore, this exhibition will be an opportunity to appreciate the harmony of color-fields and evidence of handcrafted work. And furthermore, a viewer will be able to see how the concept of “replication and appropriation”, which is the conversation topic of contemporary art, is applied to his work through this exhibition.
