Marita’s Garten

Gana Art presents 《Marita’s Garten》, a solo exhibition by Eunnim Ro (b.1946-), an artist who fills her picture-planes with simple lines and primordial colors. She was the first Korean artist to become a full professor at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences in Germany, where she contributed to art education for more than 20 years. With her impressive work in Germany, she has also participated in many prestigious exhibitions at the Bauhaus, the House of the World’s Cultures in Berlin, the Berlin Documenta, the Biennial of Peace in Hamburg, and the 5th International Paper Biennale. Gana Art has been making efforts to visualize her vast artistic perspective by holding solo exhibitions that present works categorized by different themes and periods every year since 2019. This solo exhibition aims to introduce various colors that she has spread on her canvases by focusing on Color Field paintings in the 1980s and 1990s. The title of this exhibition, 《Marita’s Garten》 was the trigger that led her to decide to live in Michelstadt. It is also the title of her solo exhibition in 1999, which consisted of works she produced after living in that city. One day Ro was invited to a garden party hosted by Marita, Hans Sieverding‘s wife, who had participated in a group exhibition together. There, she fell in love with the beautiful garden of Marita and the nature in Michelstadt, and decided to settle there. After leaving her studio in Hamburg in cold northern Germany and moving to her studio in Michelstadt, in the warm and mild southern German region, her work becomes overflowing with praise for the beauty of nature and the joy of living there. Especially the dazzling sunlight of southern Germany seems to have influenced her to use the intuitive colors of nature. This exhibition aims to understand the change in her artistic perspective before and after her settlement in Michelstadt, which marked a major turning point in her work. Eunnim Ro’s garden, which was reflected on canvas, will give an opportunity for everyone to have their own beautiful garden in their mind.

마리타가 만든 정원

가나아트는 단순하지만 원초적인 자연의 힘으로 가득한 작업을 일생에 걸쳐 지속해 온 생명의 화가, 노은님(Ro Eunnim, 1946~)의 개인전인 《마리타가 만든 정원(Marita’s Garten)》을 선보인다. 그는 한국 작가로서는 최초로 국립 함부르크 조형예술대학의 정교수로 임용되어 20여 년간 독일 미술 교육에 기여한 한편, 바우하우스, 베를린 세계 문화의 집, 베를린 도큐멘타, 국제 평화 비엔날레, 제5회 국제 종이 비엔날레 등 유수의 전시에 초대된 바 있다. 가나아트는 2019년부터 매년 각기 다른 주제와 시기로 분류한 작품을 선보이는 개인전을 개최함으로써 그의 방대한 작업 세계의 일부나마 가시화하려는 노력을 이어오고 있다. 이번 개인전에서는 1980년대에서 1990년대에 작업한 색면추상 회화에 집중하여 그가 화폭에 펼쳐낸 풍요로운 색의 향연을 소개하고자 한다.

이번 전시의 제목인 《마리타가 만든 정원》은 그가 현재 살고 있는 미헬슈타트의 고성을 알게 된 계기이자 그가 미헬슈타트에 거주한 뒤 제작한 작품으로 구성된 1999년 개인전의 제목이기도 하다. 우연한 기회에 함께 그룹전에 참가했던 작가의 부인인 마리타가 여는 가든 파티에 초대를 받았던 노은님은 그녀가 꾸며놓은 아름다운 정원과 미헬슈타트의 자연에 반하여 그곳에 정착하기를 결심했다고 한다. 추운 북독 지역의 함부르크 작업실을 떠나 따뜻하고 온화한 기후의 남독 지역의 미헬슈타트 작업실로 옮겨온 이후, 그의 작업은 말 그대로 자연의 아름다움에 대한 찬미와 그곳에서의 생에 대한 기쁨으로 넘쳐난다. 특히 눈부신 남독의 햇살은 그로 하여금 다채로운 자연의 색을 더욱 자유롭게 사용하는 데 영향을 주었던 것으로 보인다. 이번 개인전은 이처럼 그의 작업에 큰 전환기를 맞이하는 계기가 된 미헬슈타트로의 이주를 전후로 한 시기의 작품세계를 조망하는 것을 목표로 한다. 《마리타가 만든 정원》이라는 전시의 제목과도 같이 이번 개인전은 노은님이 화폭에 가꾼 그만의 정원을 들여다볼 수 있는 기회가 될 것이다. 또한 그가 마리타의 정원에 감명을 받아 노은님만의 정원을 꾸민 것과 같이, 전시장을 찾은 이들이 각기 자신만의 정원을 마음에 품을 수 있는 계기가 되길 바란다.
