Hiroshi Sugito

Hiroshi Sugito(1970-) who is a representative painter of Japanese art since the 1990s after Nara Yoshitomo(1959-) and Takashi Murakami(1962-) returns non-visual objects such as dreams, ideals, and memories to sophisticated lines and geometrical abstract images. He also accepts the feature of Japanese traditional painting that leaves the space and constructs on canvas by structurally arranging images. In particular, Sugito represents the depth of memory by putting a frame in the frame, such as drawing a curtain or a grid to create another space on the canvas. Old frames made in the 1950s and 1960s were an important material to the works to create a new space in his work and he believes these frames have a special beauty as much as the time they have passed. In addition, Sugito does not limit the space to the frame of the canvas, but also expands the space to the whole space of the exhibition. In addition, this exhibition, apples and triangles, is not only Sugito’s first solo exhibition in Korea, but also a meaningful exhibition to face his works in Korea in seven years since 2013, and 26 new works produced for this exhibition can be appreciated at the same time at Gana Art Nineone and Gana Art Sounds.

히로시 스기토(1970-)는 요시토모 나라(b. 1959)와 무라카미 타카시(b.1962)에 이어 90년대 이후 일본미술을 대표하는 화가로 인정받는 작가로, 그는 눈에 보이지 않는 꿈과 이상, 기억과 같은 비시각적인 대상을 정교한 선과 기하학적인 형태의 추상의 이미지로 환원한다. 또한 그는 여백을 살리는 일본전통회화 특성을 적극적으로 수용하여 이미지들을 구조적으로 배치하여 화면을 구성한다. 특히 스기토는 프레임 안에 프레임을 넣는 방식으로 기억의 깊이를 재현하는데, 예컨대 화면 외곽에 커튼을 그려 넣거나 그리드를 만들어내 캔버스에 또 다른 공간을 창출해낸다. 이번 전시에 출품된 작품들에는 1950-60년대에 제작된 오래된 액자가 새로운 공간을 만들어내는 도구로 사용되었으며 그는 이 액자들이 지나온 시간만큼 특별한 아름다움을 지니고 있다고 생각한다. 또한 스기토는 캔버스라는 제한된 틀에 공간을 국한하지 않고 넓게는 전시장 전체로 공간을 확장하기도 하는데, 전시 공간의 특성을 고려하여 작업을 새롭게 그리거나 선정함으로써 공간 전체를 하나의 작품으로 만들어낸다. 이번 전시 또한 스키토가 가나아트 나인원과 가나아트 사운즈라는 공간에 맞춰 제작한 작품들로 구성되었다. 더불어 본 전시 ≪apples and triangles≫은 한국에서 열리는 스기토의 첫 개인전일 뿐 아니라, 2013년 이후 7년만에 한국에서 그의 작품을 마주하는 의미 있는 자리로, 본 전시를 위해 제작된 신작 20여점을 가나아트 나인원과 가나아트 사운즈에서 동시에 감상할 수 있다.
