Ji Xin: Jeju Residency Presentation
Into the Woods

Gana Art Hannam presents Into the Woods, a Jeju residency presentation by Chinese contemporary artist Ji Xin (b. 1988). This presentation is the first project to emerge from the Gana Art Jeju Residency, developed through a collaboration between the Gana Art Foundation and K11 Art Foundation. Located in the Jeoji Culture Artists Village, the residency provides artists from Korea and abroad with time and space to focus on their practice while engaging closely with the landscape and culture of Jeju. The residency retains the structure and spatial character of a traditional Korean hanok while incorporating the contemporary facilities required for extended stays and work. By bringing living and working together within a single environment, the residency allows the experience of inhabiting a place to become part of the creative process.

Selected as the residency’s inaugural artist, Ji Xin brings together visual languages drawn from different periods and cultures within a single image. Rather than reconstructing a particular history or context, he moves beyond the conventional divide between East and West to construct an idealized world of his own, situated between the familiar and the unfamiliar. His paintings often feature female figures within interior spaces, creating scenes that hover between reality and imagination. More recently, he has turned to classical myths of birth and creation, reworking them through his own visual language and bringing his inward-looking approach into sharper focus. During his residency, Ji Xin explored Jeju on foot, encountering the island’s natural environment and the forms accumulated within it. The rough surfaces of basalt and the varied forms of stone structures appeared almost animate, while the decorative patterns and vivid colors of traditional architecture left a strong visual impression. He was particularly drawn to Jeju’s local mythology, such as the story of Goddess Seolmundae, who is said to have shaped the island. These myths speak to enduring connections between nature, the earth, femininity, and birth. These encounters opened new points of connection with the interior world he has explored through female figures and mythological elements in his earlier work. During this process, he turned to watercolor and oil pastel as his primary drawing materials, seeking to retain the material impressions of Jeju in a direct and tactile way.

The title of the exhibition, Into the Woods, begins with Ji Xin’s first arrival in Jeju. He entered the residency, surrounded by greenery, in the darkness of night, encountering a profound sense of quiet and stillness. With the surrounding forms only partially visible, the residency initially appeared as an unfamiliar space, and his time in Jeju gradually became a process of moving further into this newness. The word ‘Into’ speaks to this movement. A residency is more than a change of studio. It can engage with an unfamiliar environment, reconsider their practice, and imagine where it might lead next. For Ji Xin, his time in Jeju became an opportunity to connect new experiences with the concerns of his existing practice and to open a dialogue between the two. Into the Woods thus evokes his experience of stepping beyond the boundaries of the familiar and encountering new sensations and forms in Jeju, while opening up possibilities for the development of his future work.

Into the Woods
