Kadar Brock
HOME OF THE TRAVELER

Gana Art presents home of the traveler, a solo exhibition of Kadar Brock who is developing a distinctive visual style of abstraction focusing on the artist’s gesture and the process of artmaking. Based in Brooklyn, New York, Brock presents his new paintings with a uniquely disruptive and labor-intensive process at his first solo exhibition in Korea. Brock’s meditative and repeated action of scraping, sanding, and painting reflects his belief that humanity’s karma can be released through contemplation and introspection.

A self-reflective process of expressing how our identities mash together and become a chapter of information is intuitively present in Brock’s newest body of works. This practice also reflects Brock’s enduring exploration of every layer of his memories scattered through time. The colors and shapes of the “original image,” that is, the initial memory of the artist, change over time and merge with his later layers. These images dissolve into others, whereas his works still have traces of Brock’s powerful presence by the random scratches and holes on the canvas surface. They randomly incorporate the fragments of background space into the surface and symbolize diverse fragments of the artist’s experience that established his perspective of life. Bold in its approach and meditative in its process of deconstructing and reconstructing canvases, home of the traveler is Kadar Brock’s artistic journey to the past to make better sense of the present.

가나아트는 추상화에 드러나는 아티스트의 행위와 몸짓 즉, 제스처에 주목하며 독창적인 예술세계를 구축해 온 카다르 브록(Kadar Brock, b. 1980)의 국내 첫 개인전 《home of the traveler》를 개최한다. 뉴욕 브루클린을 중심으로 활동 중인 브록은 2022년 가나아트 나인원에서 열린 그룹전을 통해 한국에 처음 소개되었으며, 이번 개인전에서 기존의 파괴적이고 노동집약적인 작업방식을 활용하여 제작한 다수의 신작을 소개한다. 수행에 가까울 정도로 거듭 이어지는 긁어내기, 사포질, 칠하기의 과정을 거쳐 탄생한 이번 출품작은 인류가 사색과 자아 성찰을 통해 인간의 업, 즉 카르마(Karma)로부터 자유로워질 수 있다는 작가의 믿음을 반영했다.

본 전시에서 브록은 그의 정체성의 기반이 되는 각각의 요소가 어떻게 한데 뒤섞여 정보의 장이 되었는지, 시간의 흐름에 따라 흩어져 있던 기억들이 어떻게 층을 이뤘는지를 직관적으로 표현하고자 했다. 캔버스 표면이 닳아서 희미하게 남아있는 카다르 브록의 첫 번째 기억, 즉 ‘원본 이미지’의 색상과 형태는 작업과정 내내 끊임없이 변하고, 이후 덧입혀진 물감의 층과 자연스레 합쳐진다. 오히려 그의 작품에서 관람객이 작가의 현존감을 직접적으로 느낄 수 있는 요소는 작업 과정 중 캔버스 일부분이 긁히고 찢기면서 생긴 불규칙한 스크래치와 구멍이다. 이는 작품이 놓인 공간과 관람자 사이의 틈새를 자유롭게 열어주는 역할을 하면서, 작가의 삶의 방향성을 결정한 다양한 경험의 파편을 상징한다. 창조성과 파괴성을 동시에 지닌 카다르 브록의 대담하고 명상적인 작업과정은 이처럼 자신의 과거를 돌아봄으로써 현재를 보다 깊이 있게 이해하고자 하는 예술적 여정이다.
