Kaleidoscope

Gana Art is pleased to announce the opening of Kim Chunhwan (b.1968-)’s solo exhibition Kaleidoscope. Using various printed materials such as magazines and advertisements, Kim has developed his own artistic approach that crosses a boundary between two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms. Based in Seoul and Paris, the artist has shown his work at numerous galleries and institutions across the world, including Galerie RX (Paris, 2020), Ilwoo Space (Seoul, 2019), Arthus Gallery (Brussels, 2016), and Leila Heller Gallery (New York, 2012). Kaleidoscope is Kim’s first solo exhibition at Gana Art, featuring works that show his representative style as well as a new series of works created through a new artistic experiment. Adopting what inevitably becomes a waste as his artistic unit and expressing the beauty of the abandoned or overlooked, Kim actively integrates the idea of recycling into his artistic practice. His work visualizes a myriad of colors and patterns of the world, similar to what is seen through a kaleidoscope, however, the fact that it is made of commercial prints makes one reflect on the endless human desire to produce or possess something. Through this exhibition, Gana Art hopes to provide a moment of contemplation, leading to a discovery of what exists underneath the kaleidoscopic reality.

가나아트는 일상에서 발견되는 인쇄물을 작품의 재료로 사용하여 독자적인 조형 세계를 구축해온 김춘환(b.1968-) 작가의 개인전 《Kaleidoscope》를 개최한다. 서울과 파리를 오가며 작업을 지속해온 그는 Galerie RX(파리, 2020), 일우스페이스(서울, 2019), Arthus Gallery(브뤼셀, 2016), Leila Heller Gallery(뉴욕, 2012) 등에서 작품을 선보인 바 있다. 이번 전시는 가나아트에서 처음으로 개최하는 김춘환의 개인전으로, 그의 작업 세계를 대표하는 기존 작품들과 함께 새로운 시도를 통해 탄생한 연작을 소개함으로써 작가의 예술적 경로를 함께하는 자리를 마련하고자 한다.

필연적으로 폐품이 될 수밖에 없는 포장지와 광고물, 혹은 그것을 복제한 이미지를 작품의 미적 단위로 선택함으로써 리사이클의 개념을 적극적으로 도입하는 김춘환은 버려지고 간과되는 것들이 형성하는 아름다움과 이들이 응집하여 뿜어내는 에너지를 직관적으로 표현한다. 그의 작품은 만화경 속 이미지처럼 삼라만상의 빛깔과 패턴, 그리고 끊임없이 흘러가는 현실 세계를 시각화하지만, 이들이 본래 광고물에서 비롯되었다는 사실은 버려지기 위해 만들어지는 인쇄물을 끊임없이 생산해 내는 인간의 욕망을 되돌아보게 한다. 이번 전시를 통해, 시시각각 변하는 만화경 속 이미지와도 같은 현상을 관조하고 그 기저에 흐르는 본질적인 메시지에 귀를 기울이는 시간을 가져 보기를 제안한다.
