Kwak Soo young
The Light of Imagery

Gana Art is pleased to present The Light of Imagery, a solo exhibition of Kwak Soo Young(b.1954-), who has built his own painting career with the theme of ‘line’ in France and Korea. Focusing on the Cathedral series, this exhibition shows Kwak’s works in his pursuit of recovery of soul. The contrast of light and darkness that stands out in the Cathedral series reminds us of the light created by candles in a quiet chapel, inviting us to a reverent time to focus on our inner voice.

Kwak spends a long time completing the work by repeating the process of painting oil paints, acrylics, or ceramic glaze on the canvas, waiting for it to dry, and then repainting it a dozen times to make thick matière. After He scratches and peels off the flesh of the matière, a soft and peaceful form reminiscent of a bird’s nest or a bundle of threads is created in canvases. Also, in the process, the bright colors of the background hidden in the layers of paint will be revealed, illuminating the canvas, giving viewers an experience as if they are moving towards the light.

Gana Art deeply examines Kwak’s art by presenting paintings that stand out in his colorful expression. Kwak’s Cathedral series will provide time to quietly focus on the inner sound in a busy daily life. Through this, Gana Art hopes that this exhibition will be a place to strengthen our minds for the upcoming new year.

심상의 빛

가나아트는 프랑스와 한국을 오가며 ‘선(線)’을 테마로 자신만의 회화 세계를 구축해 온 곽수영(郭洙泳, b.1954-)의 개인전 《심상의 빛: The Light of Imagery》를 평창동 가나아트센터에서 개최한다. 이번 전시는 연말을 맞이하여 곽수영의 성당 시리즈를 집중 조명함으로써 영혼의 회복을 추구한 곽수영의 작업 세계를 선보이고자 한다. 성당 시리즈에서 돋보이는 명암의 대비는 고요한 예배당의 촛불이 모여 만든 빛을 연상시키며 내면의 소리에 집중하는 경건한 시간으로 초대한다. 

곽수영은 캔버스에 유화 물감이나 아크릴, 도자기의 유약을 칠하고 마르기를 기다려 다시 덧칠하는 과정을 십여 차례 반복하며 작품을 완성하는 데 오랜 시간을 들인다. 그는 이렇게 생겨 난 두꺼운 마티에르를 살을 긁어내고 채찍질하거나 끊임없이 담금질하듯 벗겨낸다. 수행적이고 강한 제스처를 거친 화폭에는 아이러니하게도 잔가지를 모아 만든 새의 둥지, 혹은 포근한 실뭉치를 떠올리게 하는 부드럽고 평화로운 형태가 생겨난다. 또한 그 과정에서 겹겹이 쌓인 물감의 층에 감추어 있던 바탕의 환한 색상이 드러나 마치 어둠을 비추는 빛처럼 화폭을 비롯한 공간을 밝히며, 관람자로 하여금 빛을 향해 나아가는 것 같은 경험을 선사할 것이다. 

가나아트는 이번 전시를 통해 곽수영의 다채로운 색채 표현이 두드러지는 회화 작품을 선보이며 그의 예술 세계를 깊이 있게 조명하고자 한다. 곽수영의 성당 시리즈는 분주한 일상 속에서 내면의 소리에 고요히 집중하는 시간을 마련해 줄 것이다. 이를 통해 본 전시가 새로운 한 해를 맞이할 마음을 다질 자리가 되기를 기대해 본다.
