A Way Home

Gana Art Hannam is pleased to present “A WAY HOME,” an exhibition with Hwang Kyubaik(b. 1932-), who has gained global fame with his reinterpret of mezzotint prints in a contemporary way, opening Wednesday, June 10, 2020. The exhibition features the past and the present of the artist by displaying the mezzotint prints and new paintings together. In his prints, ordinary objects such as a watch, umbrellas, and rocks seem somehow unfamiliar, creating a tranquil, meditative atmosphere, in which his work is often described as “a poem seen with the eyes.” In particular, the exhibition will focus on his last mezzotint print, “SOUTH NORTH KOREAN SUMMIT(2020).” Marking the 70th anniversary of the breakout of the Korean War in 2020, Hwang, who has a special wish as a veteran, commemorates the historical moment and wishes for peace by engraving the two leaders’ border footbridge talks in print during 2018 inter-Korean summit. We hope to see the artist’s unabated artistic spirit through the mezzotint print that is the last piece the artist produced in 20 years to be unveiled at this exhibition.

A Way Home

가나아트 한남은 메조틴트 판화를 현대적으로 재창조하여, 세계적 대가의 반열에 오른 황규백(b. 1932-)의 개인전을 개최한다. 이번 전시에서는 그가 거장의 반열에 오르는데 일조한 메조틴트 판화와 신작 회화를 함께 전시함으로써 ‘황규백’이란 작가의 과거와 현재를 동시에 조망하고자 한다. 그의 판화에는 시계, 우산, 바위와 같이 평범한 사물들이 결코 평범하지 않게 배열되어 있어 고요하고 명상적인 분위기를 자아내는데, 이러한 특성으로 인해 그의 작품은 ‘눈으로 보는 한 편의 시’라 수식되곤 한다. 특히 이번 전시를 통해 그의 생애 마지막 메조틴트 판화인 (2020)이 공개된다. 한국전쟁 발발 70주년이 되는 2020년을 맞이하여, 참전용사로서 그 소회가 남다른 황규백 화백은 2018년 남북정상회담 당시 두 정상의 도보다리 회담을 판화로 새김으로써 역사적 순간을 기리고, 평화를 염원한다. 본 전시에서 공개되는 20년 만에 다시 제작한 메조틴트 판화를 통해 노화백의 꺼지지 않는 예술혼을 확인할 수 있으리라 기대한다.
