Gana Art is pleased to present a solo exhibition of a Brooklyn-based artist Landon Metz’s It was unusually quiet on Lafayette Street and for a brief moment the cadence of my footsteps aligned with that of a stranger. The artist creates subtle, organic shapes that repeat across the canvas. In his first solo show in Korea from June 9 to July 16, 2023, Gana Art will present his very recent paintings and creative display.

Landon Metz has garnered attention for his experimental strategies of display as well as his ability to imbue a spare language of abstraction with visual dynamism that often incorporate elements of rhythm and repetition. His use of limited color palette and subtle, curvy shapes is closely linked to his unconventional strategies of exhibition display and painting techniques. He applies diluted dye to an unprimed canvas, creating forms characterized by simple, elegant curves. As the paint dries, the color tends to be darker towards the edges while the center becomes lighter, giving his works a sense of depth through mesmerizing gradations of color. Metz also focused on the composition of the unpainted white space, and these visual qualities have cited inspirations of Georgia O’Keeffe’s later paintings made during her travels in the New Mexico, and Morris Lewis’s aesthetics which blends colorful lines with the negative space of the canvas. Through this exhibition, Gana Art invites the visitors to Landon Metz’s artistic journey as he continues to take on new challenges and provide an opportunity to see his new works that fill the screen with a dynamic yet gentle aura.

가나아트는 뉴욕 브루클린을 기반으로 활동하는 랜든 메츠(Landon Metz, b. 1985)의 개인전 《It was unusually quiet on Lafayette Street and for a brief moment the cadence of my footsteps aligned with that of a stranger》를 개최한다. 고향인 미국 남서부 애리조나 주의 장엄한 자연 풍경에서 영감을 받은 작가는 리듬감을 자아내는 반복적인 형태들로 구성된 추상회화로 뉴욕 화단의 주목을 받았다. 본 전시는 아시아에서 최초로 선보이는 메츠의 개인전으로, 그가 즉흥적으로 지은 단시(短詩)를 제목으로 붙인 회화 신작을 소개한다. 랜든 메츠는 감각적이고 단순한 색과 유기적인 형태의 조합을 통해 다양한 변화를 시도해왔으며, 이는 일반적인 전시의 디스플레이 및 전통적인 회화의 기법을 거부하는 작가의 작업방식과 긴밀히 연결되어 있다. 그는 프라이밍(priming) 되지 않은 캔버스에 희석된 염료를 꼼꼼하게 바르며 간결하고 우아한 곡선이 특징적인 형태를 그려낸다. 이후 물감이 마르는 시간 동안 염료의 가장자리로 갈수록 캔버스가 진하게 염색되는 반면 중심부는 점점 밝아지면서, 그의 작품은 절제된 색채의 그라데이션을 통한 깊이감을 자아내게 된다. 이에 더해 메츠는 물감이 칠해지지 않은 여백의 구성에도 초점을 맞췄으며, 이러한 시각적 특징들로 인해 그의 작품은 뉴 멕시코 오지를 왕래하며 영감을 받은 조지아 오키프의 후기 회화나, 유려한 색선과 화면의 여백이 조화를 이루는 모리스 루이스의 작품과 비견되곤 한다. 가나아트는 이번 전시를 통해 새로운 도전을 이어갈 랜든 메츠의 예술세계를 조망하고, 역동적이면서 부드러운 아우라로 화면을 채운 그의 신작을 감상할 수 있는 자리를 마련하고자 한다.
