Echoes of Silence

Echoes of Silence is the first solo exhibition in Korea to spotlight the artistic world of Liu Fengzhi (1964–2017), an ethnic Korean artist from Harbin, China. After graduating from the Fine Arts Department of Harbin Normal University, Liu pursued his own path by deliberately distancing himself from the institutional currents of mainstream art amid the rapidly transforming society of China in the 1990s. His paintings are marked by contorted lines, rough and repetitive brushstrokes, and simplified forms that create compositions at once unstable and intense. Through these images, he captured moments where personal memory and the atmosphere of an era intersected with the deepest layers of inner life.

Recurring images of Tiananmen Square, monuments, and airplanes in his work reveal the tension between the individual and the collective, between freedom and constraint, memory and oblivion. These motifs transform unspoken experiences and emotions into a distinct visual language. In this respect, Liu’s practice resonates with the explorations of contemporary artists such as Zeng Fanzhi and Zhang Huan, who also engaged with the relationship between individuals and broader social contexts. Yet Liu distinguished himself by dismantling and reassembling symbolic motifs, pursuing an interpretation that is more metaphorical and psychological. As a result, his paintings function not merely as representations but as visual testimony, evoking the unseen atmosphere of a time and continuing to resonate even today.

This exhibition focuses on Liu’s paintings developed since the 2000s, spanning subjects from everyday objects to historical symbols. As the title Echoes of Silence suggests, his works generate deep and enduring reverberations. They go beyond representing specific events or spaces to visualize the resurfacing of layered memories and emotions through the passage of time, while raising fundamental questions about human nature and existence. This exhibition brings together Liu Fengzhi’s painterly symbols and metaphors, inviting viewers to encounter the layered messages of an artist whose voice lingers like an echo in silence.

류봉식 劉鋒植
침묵의 울림

《Echoes of Silence》는 중국 하얼빈 출신의 조선족 작가 류봉식(劉鋒植, 1964–2017)의 예술세계를 조명하는 국내 첫 개인전이다. 하얼빈 사범대학교 미술학과를 졸업한 그는 1990년대 이후 급격히 변모한 중국 사회 속에서 주류 미술의 흐름과는 거리를 두고 자신만의 길을 걸어왔다. 그의 회화는 굽이치고 뒤틀리는 자유로운 선, 거칠고 반복적인 붓질, 단순화된 기호적 형상들이 뒤섞이며 불안정하면서도 강렬한 화면을 만들어낸다. 이는 그의 삶 속에서 깊은 내면을 응시하며 개인적 기억과 시대적 경험이 교차하는 순간들을 포착한 것이다.

특히 그의 작품 속에 반복적으로 등장하는 천안문 광장, 기념탑, 비행기의 이미지는 개인과 공동체, 자유와 제약, 기억과 망각 사이의 긴장을 상징적으로 드러내며, 말로 표현되지 못한 감각과 정서를 회화적 언어로 풀어낸다. 이러한 방식은 증판즈(Zeng Fanzhi), 장하운(Zhang Huan) 등 동시대 중국 작가들이 개인과 사회의 관계를 탐구했던 문제의식과도 맞닿아 있으나, 류봉식은 기호적 모티프의 해체와 재구성을 통해 보다 은유적이고 심리적인 차원에서 이를 탐색했다. 그 결과 그의 회화는 단순한 기록을 넘어, 시대의 공기를 담아내는 하나의 증언이자 기억의 흔적처럼 기능하며, 오늘날까지도 강한 울림을 남기고 있다.

이번 전시는 2000년대 이후 류봉식이 집중적으로 전개한 주요 회화를 중심으로, 일상적인 사물에서부터 역사적 상징에 이르기까지 폭넓은 주제를 다룬 대표작품을 선보인다. 《Echoes of Silence》라는 제목처럼, 그의 작품은 직접적으로 발화하지 않음에도 메아리처럼 깊고 지속적인 울림을 만들어낸다. 이는 특정 사건이나 공간의 재현을 넘어, 내면에 축적된 기억과 감정이 되살아나는 과정을 시각적으로 구현하는 것이자, 동시에 인간 본성과 존재에 대한 근본적 질문을 던지는 행위이다. 이번 전시는 류봉식이 남긴 회화적 상징과 은유를 종합적으로 조망하면서, 침묵 속에 겹겹이 쌓인 그의 목소리를 관객이 새롭게 마주하는 자리가 될 것이다.
