Homeward Soar

Gana Art will host its first solo exhibition of Los Angeles-based artist Myungjin Kim who continuously experiments with sculptures made of clay. Kim moved to Los Angeles after earning her MFA in ceramic art from the Seoul National University in 2002. Through incorporating elements and inspirations she found in Korea, the United States, and Mexico, the artist has developed a distinctive visual language that pervades her intimate relationship with terracotta and ceramic. Her work resides in prominent collections including Resnick Collection, CA; Pizzuti Collection, Columbus Museum of Art, OH; Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, OR and American Museum of Ceramic Art, CA. In line with the exhibition’s title, ‘Homeward Soar,’ Kim presents her works in her homeland after more than 20 years. We hope this solo show allows the viewer to accompany her artistic journey, transforming various materials and inspirations into artworks.

Dynamic forms are shaped by the artist’s fingers, inspired by the vast landscape and natural environment she witnessed in the United States. Kim also experimented with the terra cotta technique from Mexico that reveals visible traces of the earthly color. Myungjin Kim’s work is the outcome of a combined material and technical invention from different regions, especially with her conceptual base rooted in the tradition of Korean culture. Owl as the symbol of wisdom, wealth, and luck along with ancient Cycad as the motif of tenacious vitality are frequent subject matter invoked in her series of works. Her works involve auspicious concepts that channel mystical powers of prosperity, longevity, and happiness in life. This shows that Kim traces the symbols of Hwajodo(Bird-and-flower painting, 花鳥圖) from the 19th-century Korean folk art Minhwa to create her unique ‘Contemporary Talisman.’ In the works shown at the exhibition, Kim revisits these diverse techniques and cultures that present the harmony between East and West with the promise of peace and wellness of people.

가나아트는 미국 로스앤젤레스를 기반으로 활동하며 흙을 재료로 하는 조각 작품을 선보이는 작가 김명진(Myungjin Kim, b. 1975-)의 개인전을 개최한다. 2002년 서울대학교 도자공예과 석사학위를 취득한 후 로스앤젤레스로 이주한 그는 한국, 미국, 멕시코 등 다양한 문화권에서 차용한 요소들을 하나의 작품 안에 접목하는 독자적인 예술 세계를 구축해왔다. 또한 레스닉 컬렉션(Resnick Collection, 캘리포니아), 콜럼버스 미술관의 피주티 컬렉션(Pizzuti Collection, Columbus Museum of Art, 오하이오), 조던 슈니처 미술관(Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, 오레곤), 미국 도예 박물관(American Museum of Ceramic Art, 캘리포니아) 등 유수한 기관에서 그의 작품을 소장하고 있다. “Homeward Soar”, 고향으로 향하는 날갯짓이라 명명한 본 전시명처럼, 20여 년 만에 고국에서 작품을 선보이는 이번 개인전이 다채로운 재료와 영감을 작품으로 승화한 그의 예술적 여정을 함께할 수 있는 자리가 될 것으로 기대한다.

김명진의 작품은 미국의 웅장한 자연환경에서 영감을 받은 역동적 형상과 흙 본연의 색이 자연스럽게 노출되는 멕시코 도자의 테라코타 기법의 사용이 특징적인데, 실상 작업의 개념적 뿌리는 한국의 전통 문화에 있다. 그는 부와 행운, 지혜의 상징인 부엉이와 생명력의 상징인 소철을 작품 속에 등장시켜 번영과 장수, 행복한 삶을 기원하는 주술적 개념을 담아낸다. 김명진은 이러한 상징적인 소재들을 통해 19세기 한국 민화의 한 종류인 화조도(花鳥圖)의 개념적 부분을 현대적으로 변용하여 그만의 ‘현대판 부적(Talisman)’을 탄생시켰다. 이처럼 동서양의 유구한 역사 안에서 발명된 여러 기법 및 다문화적 환경에서 얻은 영감을 가시화한 김명진의 작품에는 동서의 조화와 만인의 안녕을 기원하는 따스한 염원이 담겨 있다. 강인하고 생명력 넘치는 김명진의 작품을 소개하는 이번 전시가 현재를 살아가는 자들의 영혼을 위로하고 보호하는 휴식처가 되기를 바란다.
