Gana Art is delighted to present Hungry, Hungry, a solo exhibition by Nic Dyer (b. 1991), based in New York’s Hudson Valley. Recognized by Artsy as one of the “17 Contemporary Artists Reimagining the Still Life” in 2020, Dyer’s recent solo exhibition at Hashimoto Contemporary (New York) and participation in group exhibitions across various cities, including New York, Chicago, LA, Mexico, and Germany, underscore her increasing prominence in the art world.

Within this exhibition, Dyer unfolds her personal narrative delving into the intricacies of her relationship with food. Influenced by her mother’s stringent control over weight and diet, her journey encapsulates nearly 22 years of restriction starting at the young age of 11. As she worked through her recovery from disordered eating, she realized her malevolent perception of food was quite prevalent throughout society. Dyer began focusing on well-known stories and fables depicting food as a symbol of evil, deception, temptation, and moral decay. This thematic exploration is apparent in her reinterpretations of stories such as “Adam and Eve” and “The Fox and the Grapes”.

The exhibition’s title, Hungry, Hungry, was inspired by the renowned children’s book “The Very Hungry Caterpillar ”. This book describes a young caterpillar’s transformation into a beautiful butterfly by consuming generous amounts of various foods. This narrative functions as a metaphor for Dyer’s journey of self-healing, freeing herself from the burden of the “food” that weighs heavily on her. She harbors hope for an eventual liberation, envisioning a future where she can also transform into a beautiful butterfly. Gana Art hopes this exhibition will be an opportunity for visitors to accompany the artist’s hopeful journey while questioning their own relationship with food.

가나아트는 현재 뉴욕 허드슨 밸리를 기반으로 활동하는 작가 닉 다이어(Nic Dyer, b. 1991)의 개인전 《Hungry, Hungry》를 개최한다. 2020년 아트시(Artsy)가 선정한 “정물화를 재해석하는 주요 현대 미술가”중 한 명으로 미술계에 이름을 알린 닉 다이어는 최근 하시모토 컨템퍼러리(Hashimoto Contemporary, 뉴욕)에서 개인전을 가졌으며, 뉴욕, 시카고, LA, 멕시코, 독일 등에서 개최된 다수의 그룹전을 통해 활발한 활동을 이어 나가고 있다. 이번 전시에서 다이어는 유년 시절의 강박적 다이어트와 성인이 된 이후 앓았던 섭식장애 등 음식과 관련된 작가의 자전적인 이야기를 은유적으로 녹여낸 작품을 선보인다.

체중과 식단을 엄격하게 통제하는 어머니의 영향을 받아 다이어는 11세부터 22년간 강박적인 다이어트를 지속했다. 이로 인해 섭식장애를 앓게 된 작가는, 치료받는 과정에서 음식에 대한 악의적인 인식이 사회 전반에 널리 퍼져 있다는 사실을 깨달았다. 이러한 경험을 바탕으로 작가는 음식을 악, 속임수, 유혹 또는 도덕적 타락으로 결부시키는 특정 우화들에 관심을 가지게 되었다. 다이어는 이번 전시에서 “아담과 이브”, “여우와 포도”와 같이 음식을 탐하는 행위를 지적하는 이야기들을 작가의 독창적인 시각 언어로 재해석한다. 전시명 《Hungry, Hungry》는 동화책 “배고픈 애벌레(The Hungry, Hungry Caterpillar)”와 동명의 출품작에서 착안한 제목이다. 동화 속 “배고픈 애벌레”는 과일, 채소, 피자, 케이크를 먹은 후 고치를 짓고 잠에 들고, 깨어나 아름다운 나비로 탈바꿈한다. 이를 통해 작가는 자신을 억압하고 고통 속에 빠트린 “음식”의 저주에서 벗어나 정서적 자기 치유를 경험한다. 즉, 마음껏 먹는 것에 죄책감을 짊어지고 살았던 지난날들을 뒤로하고 자신도 언젠가는 날개를 펼치는 자유로운 비상의 순간이 오리라 깨달은 것이다. 이번 전시가 음식으로 인한 신체적, 정신적 고통을 치유하고 아름다운 나비로 거듭나는 작가의 희망적인 여정에 동반할 기회가 되길 바란다.
