Gana Art Sounds is pleased to present Nicole Dyer’s 《I HAVE IT ALL》, her first solo exhibition in Korea and in Asia. After graduating from Maryland College of Arts in 2013, she worked mostly in Baltimore until she recently moved to New York. In 2020, the Artsy picked Nicole Dyer as one of the major contemporary still-life artists. As a notable still-life artist, she has participated in diverse exhibitions during the first half of this year. Her still-life paintings show overconsumption issues related to social media and popular culture; they reveal the dysfunction of digital society and consumer culture.

Dyer was fascinated by the Vanitas painting she met on her trip to the Netherlands. She borrowed its forms and meanings and made them in modern style, expressing that the problems of greed and overuse are continuing from yesterday to today. The objects shown in her paintings can give us only a temporary satisfaction but no real benefits. Another notable feature of her works is characters who never expose their faces. Even though there are more than two depicted in the picture plane, they are all immersed in their own things. Such scene which is familiar even to us signifies the problem of loneliness in the contemporary society. As such, Dyer’s paintings reflect her interpretation of the contemporary lives behind vivid color and unique forms. We hope her work would give us an opportunity to reconsider what we are missing today in our ‘rich’ lives.

I HAVE IT ALL

가나아트 사운즈는 전통적인 정물화를 현대적으로 재해석하여 선보이는 니콜 다이어(Nicole Dyer b. 1991-)의 개인전 《I HAVE IT ALL》을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 니콜 다이어의 국내 첫 개인전으로서, 그리고 아시아 첫 개인전으로 의미가 크다. 니콜 다이어는 2013년 메릴랜드 예술대학(MICA)을 졸업하고, 약 12년간 볼티모어를 기반으로 활동하다 최근 뉴욕으로 거주지를 옮겨 활동을 지속하고 있다. 2020년 아트시(Artsy)는 니콜 다이어를 정물화를 재해석하는 주요 현대 미술가 중 한 명으로 선정한 바 있으며, 주목받는 신진작가로서 다이어는 올해 상반기에만 시카고, 뉴욕, 샌프란시스코 등에서 개최된 다수의 전시에 참여하며 활발한 활동을 이어가고 있다. 최근 그는 소셜 미디어, 웹사이트 등을 통한 정보의 과잉 소비와 대중문화 등을 탐구한 결과를 정물화 기법으로 구현하며 디지털 사회와 대중소비사회 문화의 역기능을 추적하고 있다. 이번 개인전은 그의 근작을 국내 최초 공개한다.

여행 중 우연히 마주친 바니타스 회화에 매료된 니콜 다이어는 이를 현대적인 언어로 차용해 몇 세기 전 사람들이 겪었던 과욕과 과용의 문제가 오늘도 변함없이 이어지고 있음을 말한다. 그의 화면 안에 꽉 들어찬 사물들은 하나같이 먹음직하고 보암직하다. 그러나 하나씩 떼어 보면 잠깐의 만족만 줄 뿐 결코 인간에 이롭지 못한 것들이다. 또 하나의 특징적인 요소는 얼굴을 드러내지 않는 인물들이다. 등장인물들은 회화 속 공간을 함께 점유할 뿐 각자의 세상에 골몰한 모습이다. 오늘날 우리가 살고 있는 이곳에서도 흔히 만날 수 있는 그러한 풍경은 동시대인들이 호소하는 ‘군중 속 고독’을 현시한다. 니콜 다이어의 작품을 가득 메운 사물과 인물이 익숙하게 느껴지는 까닭은 그가 지금-여기를 충실하게 재현하기 때문일 것이다. 재기 발랄한 색감과 조형성 속에 깊은 사유를 품은 다이어의 작품을 통해 혹시 오늘 우리도 너무 많은 것에 휩쓸려 균형을 잃고 사는 것은 아닌지 되돌아보는 계기가 마련되기를 기대한다.
