Otis Kwame Kye Quaicoe
EMBODIMENT

Gana Art is set to host the first solo exhibition of Otis Kwame Kye Quaicoe in Asia, titled Embodiment. Born and raised in Ghana, Quaicoe graduated from Ghanatta College of Art and Design for Fine Art and moved to Oregon in 2017 where he actively participated in institutional exhibitions including the Rubell Museum (Miami, FL), Portland Art Museum (Portland, OR), and Museo Picasso Malaga (Malaga, Spain). Also appeared on the cover of Teen Vogue and Vanity Fair, his work is in the permanent collection of the Vanhaerents Art Collection in Brussels, the Denver Art Museum, and other major venues.

After learning photography from his close friend who is a photographer, Quaicoe began to paint from his photographs, capturing the individuality and emotion of these figures. Quaicoe’s creative process applies bright, vibrant colors in attire and thickly rendered monochrome backgrounds which contrasted with tonal variations of smooth blacks and greys on the bodies of his subjects. This visual style and emphasis on Black figures draw comparison to figurative artists in the US including renowned painter and photographer Barkley L. Hendricks (1945-2017). But one of the standout features of Quaicoe’s art is his ability to capture the essence and personality of each of his subjects gazing toward the viewer with relaxed, assured poses. His works also draw inspiration from the tradition of African tattoos with linear patterns adorning these figures’ skins. Within these works, he explores the contemporary art of tattoos, which has become a fashion statement and a symbolic language of individual identity beyond ethnic or social markers. Presenting Otis Kwame Kye Quaicoe’s recent paintings, the show will delve into the physical features, inner worlds, and stories of diverse Black figures in American society.

EMBODIMENT

가나아트는 가나 출신의 작가, 오티스 콰메 계 퀘이코(Otis Kwame Kye Quaicoe, b. 1988-)의 아시아 첫 번째 개인전 《Embodiment》를 개최한다. 아프리카 가나의 가나타 예술 디자인 대학(Ghanatta College of Art and Design for Fine Art)에서 회화를 전공한 퀘이코는 2017년 아내의 고향인 미국 오리건 주로 이주했다. 퀘이코는 포틀랜드 미술관(Portland Art Museum, 오리건), 루벨 미술관(Rubell Museum, 플로리다), 피카소 미술관(Museo Picasso Malaga, 말라가, 스페인) 등 다수의 기관에서 소개된 바 있다. 또한 그의 작품은 2022년 틴 보그(Teen Vogue)와 월간지 베니티 페어(Vanity Fair) 표지로 실렸고, 반헤렌츠 아트 컬렉션(Vanhaerents Art Collection, 브뤼셀)과 덴버 미술관(Denver Art Museum, 덴버) 등 유수 미술관에 소장되며 미술계의 많은 주목을 받기도 했다.

사진작가였던 절친한 친구에게 사진을 배운 퀘이코는 직접 촬영한 다수의 인물사진을 캔버스에 옮기기 시작했으며, 이를 통해 각 인물들의 개성을 순간적으로 포착하여 회화로 표현하고자 했다. 퀘이코의 작품은 두꺼운 임파스토가 돋보이는 화사한 단색의 배경 및 의상과 피사체의 어두운 피부가 자아내는 극적인 대비감이 특징적이다. 이처럼 선명한 색감과 흑인 초상에 초점을 맞춘 작업 방향성은 흑인 화가이자 사진작가인 바클리 L. 헨드릭스(Barkley L. Hendricks, 1945-2017)의 초상화를 연상시킨다. 퀘이코는 더 나아가 관객을 정면으로 응시하는 흑인 피사체의 편안하고 당당한 태도를 통해 그들의 정신성과 인간성을 드러내고자 했다. 또한 아프리카 전통 문신에서 영감을 받은 가는 선의 패턴을 얼굴과 몸의 정교한 굴곡을 따라 표현했는데, 이를 통해 민족적, 사회 계층적인 표식이었던 문신이 점차 패션과 자아의 표현이 되었음을 암시하고 있다. 이에 가나아트는 본 전시가 미국 사회에서 흑인들의 특징, 내면, 서사를 예리하게 포착하는 오티스 콰메 계 퀘이코의 시선을 시각적으로 경험할 수 있는 뜻 깊은 자리가 될 것으로 기대한다.
