Where Silence Dwells

Gana Art Namsan presents Where Silence Dwells, a solo exhibition by Park Daesung (b. 1945), known by his pen name Sosan (小山), a master of contemporary Korean ink painting. Going beyond the traditional rhetoric of succeeding the jingyeong sansu (true-view landscape) lineage passed down from Gyeomjae Jeong Seon, this exhibition illuminates how paper, brush, and ink are acquiring an innovative visual language at the very forefront of contemporary art. Amidst the narrowing foothold of ink painting in contemporary art landscape, Park Daesung is acclaimed as a master who has elevated the lineage of tradition to a world-class level. During his 2022–2023 international touring exhibition, which traveled to Harvard University, Dartmouth College, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), leading global institutions took note of the explosive abstraction in his work and an aesthetics of negative space that structurally parallels Western Minimalism. While Western oil painting operates on a reversible structure, Park’s ink leaves an irreversible trace the moment the brush touches the hanji (traditional Korean paper). On his canvas, ink transcends being a mere black pigment to become a universe unto itself, radiating its own distinct energy. 

The artist’s journey began as a fierce struggle to transcend the existential limitations of loss and trauma. Suffering the tragic loss of his family and his left arm during the Korean War, he chose to sublimate this fate into unyielding artistic devotion rather than resentment. Forgoing formal art education and taking the nation’s mountains and rivers as his teachers, he arrived at a profound realization in SoHo, New York in 1994: “Expressing our indigenous spirit with the brush and ink that I handle best. That is true contemporary art.” He subsequently went on to boldly integrate the compositional structures of Western painting into traditional ink techniques, pioneering his own distinct visual vocabulary known as Sosan Sumuk. The works featured in this exhibition unfold sweeping vistas of sublime grandeur. His highly original multi-perspective compositions offer viewers a visceral visual pleasure. His intense dopil (刀筆; knife-like brushwork executed as if carving into rock) imparts an explosive tension to the picture plane. Forged through a life lived like an ascetic, beginning each morning with cold-water ablutions and imseo (calligraphic practice), his landscapes have arrived at a fully realized contemporary ink painting without borrowing from the visual language of the West.

고요가 머무는 곳

가나아트 남산은 한국 현대 수묵화의 거장 소산(小山) 박대성(b. 1945)의 개인전 《고요가 머무는 곳》을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 겸재 정선으로부터 이어지는 진경산수의 맥을 계승한다는 전통적 수사를 넘어, 종이와 붓, 그리고 먹이라는 동아시아의 가장 고전적인 매체가 동시대 현대미술의 최전선에서 어떠한 방식으로 혁신적인 조형 언어를 획득하고 있는지를 조명하는 자리다. 박대성은 수묵화의 입지가 좁아지는 현대미술의 지형도 속에서 전통의 맥을 세계적 수준으로 격상시킨 거장으로 평가받는다. 지난 2022-2023년 하버드대학교, 다트머스대학교, 로스앤젤레스 카운티 미술관(LACMA) 등에서 개최된 해외 순회전에서 세계적인 미술 기관들은 그의 작품이 지닌 폭발적인 추상성과, 서구 미니멀리즘과 구조적으로 맞닿아 있는 여백의 미학에 주목한 바 있다. 서양의 유화가 캔버스 위에 물감을 덧칠하며 형태를 보완해 나가는 가역적 구조라면, 박대성의 수묵은 붓이 닿는 즉시 한지에 스며들어 돌이킬 수 없는 흔적을 남긴다. 그의 화폭 위에서 먹은 단순한 검은 안료를 넘어, 그 자체로 고유한 에너지를 발산하는 하나의 우주가 된다. 

작가의 예술적 출발은 결핍과 장애라는 실존적 한계를 초월하려는 치열한 사투였다. 한국전쟁의 참화 속에서 가족과 왼쪽 팔을 잃은 참혹한 상처를 겪었으나, 그는 이 운명을 원망하는 대신 예술적 집념으로 승화시켰다. 정규 미술 교육 대신 전국의 산천을 스승 삼아 홀로 붓을 든 그는, 1994년 뉴욕 소호에서 “내가 가장 잘 다루는 붓과 먹으로 우리 고유의 정신을 표현하는 것이 진정한 현대미술”이라는 자각에 도달했다. 이후 전통 수묵 기법에 서양화의 조형적 구성을 과감히 융화하며 ‘소산수묵’이라는 독자적 화법을 개척해 냈다. 새의 눈으로 산세를 굽어보거나 물고기의 시선으로 공간을 왜곡해 바라보는 독창적인 다시점 구도는 관람객에게 시각적 쾌감을 선사하며, 바위를 깎아내듯 긋는 강렬한 도필(刀筆)은 화면에 폭발적인 장력을 부여한다. 매일 아침 냉수마찰과 임서(臨書)로 하루를 여는 구도자 같은 삶 속에서 빚어진 그의 풍경은, 서구의 언어를 빌리지 않고도 온전한 현대적 수묵화에 이르러 있다. 

가장 한국적인 필묵으로 세계적인 공명을 이끌어내는 이번 전시는, 빠르게 흘러가는 현대의 속도에 지친 우리에게 잠시 멈춰 호흡을 늦출 수 있는 깊은 쉼터가 되어줄 것이다. 박대성이 제안하는 수묵의 여백 안에서, 먹이 뿜어내는 강렬한 생명력과 한국 미학의 장엄한 서사를 경험해 보길 바란다.
