Mystique Moonlight

Gana Art is pleased to announce the opening of Mystique Moonlight, a solo exhibition of a new series of works by Roby Dwi Antono (b. 1990). Based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, the artist works in various mediums including painting, drawing, and sculpture and creates phantasmagorical scenes in which wide-eyed children, dinosaurs, and mythological creatures coexist. Antono’s work has been introduced at the Biennale Jogja 2017 and also exhibited at numerous galleries and institutions including Nanzuka Underground (Tokyo) and Thinkspace Projects (Los Angeles). Mystique Moonlight is Antono’s first solo exhibition in Korea, featuring a new series of paintings and drawings inspired by moonlight and the night sky. In Antono’s works, the moon appears with his typical iconographic elements such as hybrid-creatures or children in the natural landscape that seems to be out of specific time and space. In this surrealistic scene, the moon is also connected to a part of a human body or radiates inside of it, symbolizing the light of life that transcends time and space. Out of the linear flow of time or logical thinking, Antono’s characters live in peace and harmony, drawing out each other’s light or sharing it. With Antono’s work in which opposing elements such as darkness and light and grotesqueness and innocence coexist, Gana Art hopes to provide the audience with a moment of contemplation, inviting them to look at life from new perspectives.

Mystique Moonlight

가나아트는 인도네시아 욕야카르타 출신의 시각예술가 로비 드위 안토노(Roby Dwi Antono, b. 1990)의 개인전 《Mystique Moonlight》를 개최한다. 어린 아이와 공룡, 해부학적 요소, 자연 풍경 등을 결합한 초현실적인 장면을 회화, 드로잉, 조각 등 다양한 매체를 통해 선보이는 그는 2017 족자비엔날레, 난주카 언더그라운드(도쿄), 싱크스페이스 프로젝트(로스앤젤레스) 등에서 작품을 선보이며 전 세계적인 주목을 받고 있다. 《Mystique Moonlight》는 국내에서 처음 열리는 안토노의 개인전으로, 밤하늘과 달빛에서 영감을 받아 제작된 회화와 드로잉 신작을 소개한다.

안토노의 작품에서 달은 특정한 시대나 장소를 추론할 수 없는 풍경을 배경으로 여러 요소가 합쳐진 생명체나 어린아이, 공룡 등과 함께 등장하여 무의식으로 구성된 꿈의 한 장면처럼 포착된다. 또, 절단된 신체의 일부와 연결되거나 그 속에서 빛을 방사하는 듯한 모습으로도 그려져 시공을 초월하여 본질적으로 존재하는 생명의 빛을 상징한다. 선형적인 시간의 흐름과 논리적 사고에서 벗어난 그의 초현실적인 세계에서, 작가의 상상력으로 빚어진 등장인물들은 서로의 빛을 꺼내거나 함께 발견하고 공유하며 조화를 이룬다. 어둠과 빛, 그로테스크함과 어린아이의 천진함 등 상반되는 요소들이 공존하는 안토노의 작품 세계가 익숙한 사고에서 벗어나 삶을 새롭게 바라보는 기회를 제공하기를 기대한다.
