Romon Kimin Yang (a.k.a. Rostarr)
INFINITY COSMOS

Gana Art Nineone is pleased to present INFINITY COSMOS, Romon Kimin Yang (b.1971-)’s the very first solo exhibition in Korea. Blurring the boundaries between fine art and graphic design, he, a.k.a. Rostarr, has been active in a variety of areas: painting, sculpture, calligraphy, sculpture, public art projects, and collaboration with a big-name brand. Being a founding member of Barnstormers, an art collective formed in 1999, the artist sought his own original way called “Graphysics”, a word that exemplifies the geometric dynamism characteristic in his work.

This solo exhibition consists of his new works inspired by “mandala.” Mandala, which means “circle” in Sanskrit, symbolizes the cosmos metaphysically; a time-microcosm of the universe, and originally meant to represent wholeness. During the last year’s lockdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Romon has stayed in Bali and dug down into the theme of a mandala. The artist understood the mandala as a kind of a cosmic diagram that shows the relation to the infinite and the world and transcends beyond and within various minds and bodies. Since he reinterprets mandala painting from a contemporary formative language, visitors can find a circular shape reminiscent of the mandala in the works, and the title of the works is named after relations to the universe.

About the work

“Kill The Ego” is the result of the collaboration, initiated by Dalbin, between the American painter Rostarr and the experimental sound collective Soundwalk.

As an homage to Henri-Georges Clouzot filming Pablo Picasso in “The Mystery of Picasso”, this video offers a rare opportunity to experience painting as a form of art in motion and to discover Rostarr’s experimentations with diverse techniques using brush, roller, spray paint, krink, projection, black light, stop-motion animation, super 8 camera, stencil, abstract calligraphy, b-boy painting and outdoor illegal street installation. The extensive period of recordings in New York (1998-2008), mixed in a 40-minute audio-piece with the finesse Soundwalk Collective is now world famous for, brings you into a rich and versatile journey in New York’s most iconic soundscapes and musical history.
