Super Future Kid
Sternenstaub : Stardust

Gana Art is pleased to announce Sternenstaub: Stardust, a solo exhibition by Super Future Kid(b. 1981-), an artist based in Brooklyn, New York. Born in East Germany prior to the collapse of the Berlin Wall, Super Future Kid’s artistic endeavours are influenced by pop culture elements, including video games, music, early internet culture, and toys from West Germany following reunification. Her work has been featured in leading galleries all over the world, such as Tang Contemporary Gallery (Hong Kong, Beijing, Seoul, Bangkok), Over the Influence (Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Bangkok, Paris), and Koenig Galerie (Berlin, Mexico City, Seoul). This exhibition marks her first solo show in Korea, unveiling seven new works depicting human figures with a cracked and broken concrete-like appearance.

The title of this solo exhibition, Sternenstaub, translating to “stardust” in German, encapsulates the thematic foundation of the artist’s new series, which is a fundamental component of the universe. “That everything will break and crumble at some point, creatures, buildings, mountains, even stars.” In the artist’s words, the underlying idea of the new series is that all entities are subject to eventual decay, and become part of the stardust that makes up the cosmos. Central to her new series are human figures whose physiques evoke the imagery of cracked and broken concrete. The artist uses the imperfect material of concrete to convey the fragility and limitations of the human body, contrasting it with the traditional notion of bone and flesh.

Despite this imperfection, the figures depicted exude calmness and strength, engaging in activities like archery and leisurely walks, symbolizing a resilient will to live. Moreover, the artist placed small symbols representing different aspects of the human experience alongside the human body, such as love, nature, laughter, luck, etc. Through these elements, she imbues the concrete-bodied figures in her paintings with a sense of humanity. This gesture highlights the artist’s warm gaze and fondness for humanity. Instead of adopting a nihilistic perspective that suggests humans will all ‘die and vanish,’ Super Future Kid’s artwork explores the hidden significance of life and the essence of humanity itself.

가나아트는 뉴욕 브루클린을 기반으로 활동하는 슈퍼 퓨처 키드(Super Future Kid, b. 1981-)의 개인전 《Sternenstaub : Stardust》를 개최한다. 베를린 장벽 붕괴 이전의 동독에서 태어난 슈퍼 퓨처 키드는 통일 이후 서독에서 유입된 비디오 게임, 음악, 초기 인터넷, 장난감과 같은 대중문화에서 영감을 받은 작업을 선보여 왔으며, 탕 컨템포러리 갤러리(Tang Contemporary Gallery, 홍콩, 베이징, 서울, 방콕), 오버 더 인플루언스(Over the Influence, 홍콩, 로스앤젤레스, 방콕, 파리), 쾨닉 갤러리(Koenig Galerie, 베를린, 멕시코 시티, 서울)와 같은 전 세계 유수 갤러리의 전시를 통해 소개된 바 있다. 본 전시는 한국에서 열리는 그녀의 첫 번째 개인전으로, 금이 가고 부서진 콘크리트의 몸을 가진 인간의 형상을 그려낸 7점의 신작을 조명하는 자리가 될 것이다.

‘슈테른슈타우브(Sternenstaub),’ 독일어로 ‘별먼지(stardust)’를 뜻하는 본 개인전의 제목처럼 작가의 신작은 우주의 기본 구성 요소 중 하나인 ‘별먼지’ 개념에서 시작되었다. “생물, 건물, 산, 심지어 별까지 모든 것이 언젠가는 부서지고 무너집니다.”라는 작가의 말처럼 모든 개체는 필연적으로 죽음을 마주하고 결국 우주를 구성하는 별먼지의 일부가 된다는 것이 이번 신작의 근간에 깔린 작가의 생각이다. 그의 신작에서 가장 눈에 띄는 것은 단연 금이 가고 부서진 콘크리트의 몸을 가진 인간의 형상이다. 뼈와 살을 가진 인간다운 육체가 아닌 불완전한 콘크리트로 이뤄진 몸을 통해 작가는 인간의 육신이 지닌 취약함과 유한함을 상기시킨다. 하지만 이런 불완전한 육체를 가졌음에도, 작가가 그려낸 인간은 침착하고 강인한 모습으로 활을 쏘고, 산책을 하는 등 삶에 대한 의지를 보여준다. 또한 우리의 삶에서 경험할 수 있는 사랑, 자연, 웃음, 행운 등을 상징하는 아이콘을 그림 속에 배치해 삶의 여러 요소를 암시하기도 한다. 이러한 요소들은 그가 묘사한 콘크리트 몸을 가진 존재가 우리와 같은 인간으로 보이게 하며, 인간에 대한 작가의 따뜻한 시선과 애정을 반영한다. 이처럼 슈퍼 퓨처 키드는 단순히 ‘모두 죽어 없어질’ 인간이라는 냉소적인 태도를 보이는 것이 아닌, 작업을 통해 보이지 않는 삶의 가치, 인간이 인간일 수 있는 이유에 대해 질문한다.
