The Essence of Korean Aesthetics —
Ancient and Modern Buncheong-sagi

The Korea Foundation strives to communicate effectively with the rest of the world on behalf of the Korean people. Together with the Gana Foundation for Arts and Culture, which is leading the efforts to promote arts and culture, we hold the special online exhibition, “The Essence of Korean Aesthetics – Ancient and Modern Buncheong-sagi.”

Buncheong-sagi or buncheong ware is short for bunjang-hoecheong-sagi and refers to a form of traditional Korean ceramics with a grayish-blue tone. Coated with white slip, it was mainly produced in the early Joseon period, which corresponds to the 15th and 16th centuries. Its nonchalant beauty, achieved with simple and seemingly-effortless shapes, various techniques, and free-spirited and bold patterns, is regarded as the true nature and essence of Korean aesthetics.

This exhibition is intended to shed light on Korean buncheong-sagi in the context of world ceramics through the ages and to showcase it to the world for its unique features and beauty. The exhibition was last year scheduled to open at Meissen Porzellan-Stiftung GmbH in Germany in July and at the State Museum of Oriental Art in Moscow, Russia in November last year. Instead, it will be shown online due to the worldwide spread of COVID-19.

This special exhibition will feature master buncheong works from the collection of the Gana Foundation for Arts and Culture; contemporary works including Heart Sutra by Yoon Kwang-cho, one of the living buncheong masters; and paintings by Ko Young-hoon and Oh Sufan, who represent the contemporary Korean art world. This exhibition should enable more people at home and abroad to gain a general understanding of the history of buncheong-sagi and its aesthetics, which still inform Korean contemporary art all these hundreds of years later.

한국 미학의 정수 – 고금 분청사기

국민과 함께 세계와 소통하는 한국국제교류재단(Korea Foundation)은 미술문화의 대중화에 앞장서는 가나문화재단과 공동주최로 온라인 특별전 『한국 미학의 정수 – 고금 분청사기』를 개최합니다. 

분청사기는 ‘분장회청사기(粉粧灰靑沙器)’의 줄임말로, 조선시대 초, 15-16세기에 유행한 백토 분장을 특징으로 하는 회청빛의 도자기를 말합니다. 소박하고 무심한 형태와 다양한 기법, 자유롭고 대담한 무늬가 빚어내는 우연의 미감은 한국 미학의 본성이자 정수로도 평가됩니다. 

이 전시는 세계 도자 역사의 흐름에서, 한국의 분청사기를 조망하며 그 특색과 아름다움을 알릴 목적으로 기획되었습니다. 본래는 2020년 7월 독일 마이센 도자 박물관(Meissen Porzellan-Stiftung GmbH)을 시작으로, 지난해 11월에는 러시아 모스크바 동양 박물관(State Museum of Oriental Art in Moscow)에서 순회 전시가 개최될 예정이었지만 세계적인 COVID-19 확산 상황으로 인하여 온라인 전시로 대체하게 되었습니다. 

이번 특별전에는 가나문화재단 소장 조선시대 분청사기 명품과 분청사기의 대가 윤광조의 <심경>을 비롯한 현대 분청사기, 현대 한국 화단을 대표하는 고영훈, 오수환 작가의 회화가 출품됩니다. 이번 전시를 통해서 분청사기의 역사와 함께 현대 미술과 조응하는 분청사기 미학의 정수를 국내와 해외의 더욱 많은 사람들이 느낄 수 있기를 기대합니다.
