Gana Art Sounds in collaboration with Matt Black is pleased to present Tyson Reeder’s 《29 Palms》, his first solo exhibition in Asia. The exhibition introduces a new series of paintings which embody the landscape of Twentynine Palms located at the entrance of Joshua Tree National Park in California. His work highlights the artist’s own perspective on the imaginary cityscape as well as the mysterious and dreamy atmosphere triggering memories of vacations and wanderlust. It’s a natural continuation of the body of work created for his collaboration with iconic French fashion brand Celine. Tyson’s works are held in numerous public collections such as MoMa and Rubell Family Collection.

가나아트 사운즈는 영상 제작자이자 큐레이터인 맷 블랙 (Matt Black)과의 협업을 통해 시카고를 기반으로 활동하는 타이슨 리더(Tyson Reeder, 1974-)의 아시아 첫 개인전 《29 Palms》를 개최한다. 주로 야외에서 직접 풍경을 보고 그리는 앙플레네르(En Plein Air) 기법을 사용하는 작가는 패션 브랜드 셀린느(Celine)와의 협업으로 환상적인 형태의 자연과 도시 풍경이 그려진 아이템을 선보이며 이름을 알렸다. 전시명에서 유추할 수 있듯, 본 전시에서는 캘리포니아주 조슈아 트리 국립공원의 초입에 위치한 투웬티나인 팜스(Twentynine Palms)라는 도시를 구현한 작품들이 전시된다. 특히 그가 동경해온 동명의 음악가 및 밴드의 이름에서 영감을 받아 명명한 <Zoogz Rift Series>(2021)와 <Smog Series>(2021)를 통해 특정한 장소에서 벌어지는 새벽, 여명, 황혼, 밤과 같은 시간대의 변화에 주목한다. 해가 지거나 뜰 때의 어스름한 빛이 스며들어 자연과 어우러진 그의 작품 속 고요한 도시 경관은 자유롭게 여행할 수 있었던 지난날에 대한 향수와 원더러스트(wanderlust)를 전달한다. 이처럼 원래의 일상으로 돌아가고자 하는 소망을 담은 그의 신작이 공개되는 이번 전시가 관람객들에게 만연한 우울감이나 공허함을 문화적인 신선함으로 치유하는 시간이 되길 희망한다.
