The Odd Nature

Gana Art is pleased to present The Odd Nature, a solo exhibition by Yoo Keunyoung (b. 1948), a pivotal figure in the art scene of Daejeon in Korea. After graduating the Department of Painting and the Graduate School of Aesthetics at Hongik University, the artist contributed to the development of Daejeon’s contemporary art by leading important groups of the 1970s-80s including the “Repor,” “Daejeon’s 78 Generation,” and “19751225” groups that played crucial roles in the emergence and development of contemporary art in Daejeon during that period. This exhibition offers a comprehensive survey of the artist’s visual practice over three decades, from the early works of his signature series The Odd Nature, begun in the early 1990s to his most recent pieces. More than simply retracing one artist’s formal achievements, it illuminates how a voice might have been marginalized in Korean contemporary art nonetheless forged an original language and affirmed a distinct artistic identity.  

From the late 1960s onwards, when Op Art and geometric abstraction had become the dominant discourse in Korean art, Yoo developed his own visual language, avoiding the mainstream trends. Particularly in his signature series The Odd Nature, presented in this exhibition, the artist, as the title suggests, rejects conventionalized views of nature. By freely orchestrating the fundamental elements of painting —dot, line, plane, color, and light— he envisions another kind of nature, one that resists reduction to rational or logical order. His landscapes, with distorted forms and unexpected color arrangements, move beyond literal depiction to form a distinctly visual language where observation and memory merge with imagination.  By defying conventional boundaries, his work evokes the sense of freedom and purity latent in nature—qualities that stand in sharp contrast to the hyper-digital realities of contemporary life. Composed of intense color and liberated brush strokes that fill the canvas, the artist’s odd landscapes capture not merely representation but the archetypal essence of nature and inner vision he experienced. The exhibition invites viewers to revisit his artistic journey and reflect on how art can remain a conduit for purity and freedom within the complexities of modern existence.

엉뚱한 자연

가나아트는 대전 지역 미술계의 중추적 인물로 자리 잡아온 유근영(Yoo Keunyoung, b.1948)의 개인전 《엉뚱한 자연 The Odd Nature》을 개최한다. 작가는 홍익대학교 서양화과와 동 대학원 미학과를 졸업한 후 1970-80년대 대전 현대미술의 태동과 전개에 중요한 역할을 한 ‘르뽀 동인회’, ‘대전 78세대’, ‘19751225’ 등의 그룹을 이끌어가며 지역 미술 발전에 이바지했다. 이번 전시는 1990년대 초반 시작된 그의 대표 연작 〈엉뚱한 자연〉의 초기작부터 근작에 이르기까지, 30여 년간 확장된 작가의 조형 세계를 총체적으로 조망한다. 이는 단순히 한 작가의 조형적 성취를 되짚는데 그치지 않고, 한국 현대미술의 흐름 속에서 주변부로 밀려날 수도 있었던 목소리가 어떻게 독창적인 언어로 형성되고 그만의 정체성을 확립해왔는지를 보여주는 자리가 될 것이다. 

1960년대 후반부터 옵아트와 기하학적 추상이 한국 미술계의 주된 담론으로 자리 잡던 시기에, 유근영은 주류 담론에 휩쓸리지 않고 독자적인 예술세계를 구축했다. 특히 본 전시에 소개되는 대표 연작 〈엉뚱한 자연〉에서 작가는 작품의 제목이 시사하듯 정형화된 자연관을 배제한다. 그는 점·선·면·색·빛과 같은 회화의 기본 요소들을 자유롭게 변주하여 이성과 논리의 질서로 환원되지 않는 또 다른 자연을 제시한다. 형태를 비틀고 색을 예상 밖으로 배치한 그의 자연풍경은 사실적 재현을 넘어 관찰과 기억, 상상과 내면적 심상이 교차된 작가만의 회화적 세계다. 이처럼 관습적 경계를 넘어선 유근영의 작품은 디지털 문명이 지배하는 오늘날의 일상과 대조적으로 자연 속에 잠재된 자유와 순수성을 일깨운다. 화면을 가득 메운 강렬한 색채와 자유로운 필치로 구성된 작가의 엉뚱한 풍경은 단순 재현의 차원을 넘어, 그 속에서 느꼈던 자연의 원형과 내면의 심상을 담아낸 것이다. 이에 이번 전시가 그의 예술적 여정을 다시 살펴보며, 예술이 어떻게 우리 삶 속에서 순수성과 자유의 통로가 될 수 있는지를 성찰하게 하는 기회가 되기를 바란다.
